On the old forums, users could specify gender and it would actually appear beneath their avatar. When setting up the new phorum, I decided not to include that in the profile, for various reasons. But as we've gotten some new pholks on board that weren't on the previous forum, I've found it awkward since English doesn't have a gender-neutral pronoun, and I don't want to insult anyone by making assumptions on their gender.

If I included the ability to specify, I would add an 'Unspecified' option so people who wanted their privacy intact could remain anonymous.

What do you pholk think?

I think it would help for the same reasons you said.

Doesn't really matter to me a bit. Having said that, I vote that from now on we use the word "glog" as a gender-neutral pronoun. All in favor?

I think "glog" actually would be really useful.  You know when you're walking down the street and you see someone whose sex is really hard to determine (ie a guy with really long hair or a girl with a shaved head), you could say to your friend, "glog has a really nice sport coat" and it would make life a lot easier!

Well, English does really need a gender-neutral pronoun now that we're trying to alter our patriarchal mindset a bit. Unfortunately, most of the words suggested aren't much more euphonic than glog, so it functions as well as anything. Or we could just adapt an old phorum tradition and use 'thingy,' although that could make for some unintentionally risque sentences...

It looks like you pholk are pretty well agreed. I figured this would be the result, since you people are pretty cool about being open with one-another, and I'm glad it appears to be unanimous. I'll try to implement this once I get home.
