Tonight I caught the back half of "MTV Album Covers." On this particular episode, Dashboard Confessional was covering songs from REM's Automatic for the People.

I was surprised at how well they pulled it off. In fact, some of their arrangements-- "Sweetness Follows," for example-- were actually improvements on the originals. Unfortunately, Dashboard's singer sounds like a pathetic sissy compared to Michael Stipe, and his whiney, angsty vocals came close to ruining a few songs, like "Find the River."

Show highlight: Michael Stipe himself joining the band on stage to perform "Drive." Fantastic performance, even if Stipe seemed a little subdued.

Anyway, interesting program. Can't say that I'm an MTV fan-- actually, I hate it from the very depth of my soul-- but if they ever do this show with another good band being honored (Coldplay covering U2, perhaps? Heck, half their songs sound like U2 covers anyway), I might be tempted to watch it again.

I read somewhere that during the recording sessions Michael Stipe stood up and yelled "that's the best version of the song I've EVER heard!" when Carraba and Co. finished interpreting "Nightswimming."

That's pretty high praise.

Yeah, he did say that, actually. I disagree; Dashboard added a drummer, which kinda left a bad taste in my mind. Call me a purist, but I prefer the original, drumless arrangement.

Allow me to quote myself, from a previous thread at CMC where I was falsely accused of saying bad things about Dashboard Confessional:

First of all, I would never say that Dashboard sucks. Second, they do suck.

Oh come on now. Dashboard may suck, but they're fun to listen to, unless you have suicidal tendancies, or if you're in the car with a former girlfriend on the way to a concert.

Hmm... If you did have suicidal tendencies, and a former girlfriend was the cause of those suicidal tendencies, then having her as a passanger in a moving vehicle that you were in command of would present quite an enticing opportunity, now wouldn't it?

By the way, nice sig.  Wink
