Anybody heard this record? I'd never even heard of Abra Moore until just this week, when the great Thom Jurkek gave it a glowing recommendation. The audio clips sound interesting. I'm going to have to pick this one up soon. |

Everything Changes is one of the most unabashedly radio-friendly albums I've heard in many, many moons.
And it's also the finest album of 2004 so far.
Picked this one up and am enjoying it quite a bit. It reminds me of a whole bunch of great pop artists-- there are shades of The Beatles, Sam Phillips, Over the Rhine (Films for Radio-era, especially) and, above all, Sixpence None the Richer.
In fact, this is the kind of record that I wish Sixpence had made. It manages to pull off a dense, symphonic sound without ever feeling overproduced or overpolished.
I haven't had a chance to spend much time with the lyrics yet, but that'll come soon.
I heartily commend this one to you all.

NP: Some radio-friendly crap, who cares? Heh... yeah, I seriously considered waiting til tomorrow to talk about this album, today being what it is and all, but I really DO love it. And I'll still be saying that tomorrow, I can assure you. |

My vote for this year is going to Xiu Xiu or Sufjan Stevens so far, but I'll try to check it out. Josh is on my shortlist of musical opinion-makers to whom I take some heed.

If I had to pick a favorite album from 1Q 2004, it would be Vienna Teng's Warm Strangers, by far. But I haven't picked up that many new releases so far this year. Still, VT was my #1 most anticipated album, and will be tough to beat by my standards.

I've been listening to this album all day, and man... this gal sounds a lot like Leigh Nash, minus the annoying shrillness that sometimes creeps into Leigh's voice.

After listening to this record several times, I must say that I generally agree with Josh on this one. I especially enjoy the use of the horns in some of the songs, makes it stand out from the crowd some what. My biggest quibbles with this album is that it sometimes sounds a little too much like generic radio pop, to the extent that I just kind of start to zone it out, and that it seems to pack most of the cheery, faster songs at the beginning, causing uneveness, but for the most part I think it stands out as something different.

I had siomilar problems with it. Not that I expect it all to be upbeat or anything, but the pacing is uneven. Somewhere between tracks 7 and 12, it starts to depend too much on airy songs that drift about and kind of trail off without much of a payoff. Some of the songs are memorable, but it's a bit hard to tell them all apart. Then all of a sudden this upbeat song comes out of nowhere to close the album. Very strange.
