I wrote this brief little blurb for my blog. This has been weighing heavily on my heart and mind, I guess. Anyway, read it and feel free to comment. Don't worry-- it's quite short.

"Let Us Not Forget to Tremble"

The title of this entry comes from a Nichole Nordeman song. I wish that more of her CCM peers-- and indeed, Christ's church in general-- would take her words to heart.

It seems like our Christian mini-culture-- even our worship songs-- often forget the holy nature of the name of our Lord. Far too often we throw around the precious name of Jesus carelessly, neglecting to show it the reverence that it deserves. And that, my friends, is taking the Lord's name in vain.

Jesus Christ is not just our buddy. I sometimes think that we have a tendency to overplay the "Jesus as our friend" philosophy. While Jesus is most certainly our friend, that doesn't mean that we should approach His throne in the same way we would approach a fallen human friend. Let us not forget that Jesus Christ is the King of Kings, and His is a matchless name, the name that is above all names.

Man's duty is this: Fear God and obey His commands. Let us not forget to tremble.

Good words, Josh. The Christ is neither a commercial product nor a political officeholder. What he deserves goes beyond respect; it's reverence.

Egad... one friend read this and informed me that it was "legalistic."

How very baffling...

Well, it is kind of presumtuous of you to tell others how to live their lives and how to treat the creator of the universe...obviously, they know what's best for themselves. If they want to mock Christ, hey, He's your buddy. He'll take one for the team.

Sigh...

Funny how people won't accept anything except the clearest premise drawn from scripture nowadays without calling it "legalistic". And funny how they use such things to justify cozying up to a God who holds the entire universe together like he's their drinking buddy.

Hmm..... after some thought I will have to admit this is true. Many Christian songs do throw the Name of God around and it is sad to see.
