And by that, I don't mean that you have to drink a lot of beer and get arrested for DUI.

My idea is this: for seven days (today through Friday), the people who join in the Pub Frenzy upload 1 song per day sometime after 6:00pm. Then at the end of the week, we compare the seven songs that we've gotten from eachother, and rate them on a scale of 1 - 10.

Anyone in?

I'd like to be in, but the lack of a working CD-ROM makes it rather tricky.  Could I still vote, though?

Which is encouraging, for me, at least, that I still can't count, and that it will be less downloading Smiley

It just occured to me that I can simply download the song I want to upload from file sharing, rather than ripping it from the CD.  I'm in.

EDIT: My first song is ready to go.  Bring it on!

sounds fun. I don't really like rating you guys' songs though; most of the time I find I don't connect with many of them and therefore don't "like" them but that doesn't mean I think they are bad songs or not good music.

I was thinking that maybe we should vote each day on the previous day's songs, then just tally them up at the end.  I think this would be more manageable, as the song for the day would be all we would have to focus on, rather than the large number of ratings we would be dealing with if we saved it all until the end.

Me too.  I'm going to make an effort to keep up day-by-day ratings, so be sure to upload today if you're taking part!

I'm in.

So, I'm guessing the goal is to put up the best song.

Are there any restrictions? Like are U2 and Radiohead out of the question?

I'm making an effort to pick songs by artists that haven't been covered to death here.  You probably won't see any U2, R.E.M., or Radiohead songs from me.  I might do some Sam Phillips, though. We'll see.

why not?

Day 1:  Loretta Lynn - Portland Oregon w/ Jack White

It might not require as much downloading as I thought - I own the Ben Folds album.

I just noticed halfway through today's upload that I had the transfer mode set to ASCII instead of binary.  Was everyone able to get my Day 1 song succesfully, or was it corrupted?

Dv's 100% Subjective Day 1 Ratings:

Afro - Stevie Wonder's "Golden Lady"  6/10 - Stevie Wonder is cool, but this song doesn't quite represent him at his best, IMO.

Bloop - Loretta Lynn's "Portland, Oregon"  7/10 - An interesting modern context for a classic style.

cbluejays - Urban Sophisticates' "Take the Train Home"  6/10  - The guitar sample provides some interesting texture, but the rest of the song just doesn't manage to keep that same level of interest for me.

Schil - Natlie Merchant's "My Skin" 8/10 - Hey, this lady is pretty cool!  She reminds me of Kerin Peris from The Innocence Misssion.

Skraps - The Decemberists'  "Leslie Anne Levine" 9/10  - Very cool stuff, I'll have to check out this band further.

A couple of totally biased thoughts for you, Dv:

1. Yes, I've heard the Karen/Natalie comparison before, and, just for the record, I think Peris' voice is much more beautiful and has a more impressive range. But what can I say, I'm a fanboy...

2. If you're interested in hearing more Merchant, skip her solo work. Her material from back when she was with 10,000 Maniacs is much more interesting, in my opinion.

that was the first song of Natalie's that I've heard. I like Karen's vocals but since we're comparing the two, I think Natalie's enunciation is a bit clearer than Karen's and the texture of her voice is silkier and not as frail, at least going by the songs I've heard from each of them.

I'm enjoying "Portland, Oregon" quite a bit. listened to "Leslie Anne Levine" and "Losing Lisa" once each but didn't particularly enjoy them. haven't downloaded the others yet; I'll do that when I upload my second song shortly.

Stevie Wonder - "Golden Lady" upped by Afro
There's plenty to like about the song.  His voice is always a highlight for me, and there's more going on than is apparent.  I prefer his more political or social songs, but this is a fine, albeit somewhat repetitive, song.  8/10

Urban Sophisticates - "Take the Train Home" upped by cbluejays
Laid back - it's all about lyrics for me here.  Love the subdued brass section and the guitar adds tremendously where it pops up.  7/10

Natalie Merchant - "My Skin" upped by schill
While I agree with Josh that her most interesting work as a whole is with 10,000 Maniacs (her vocal work with them is very unique), she hasn't lost her gift in songwriting.  It'd probably be heartbreaking if I had one to break.  9/10

The Decemberists - "Leslie Ann Levine" upped by skraps
This reminds me so much of a Neutral Milk Hotel song right down to the theme and vocals.  Any idea which one?  Anyway, it's a much clearer song than the NMH song I'm thinking of.  9/10

Ben Folds - "Losing Lisa" upped by Dv
I didn't download this one since I already own the album.  It's one of the songs that fades into the background, honestly.  A solid piano pop song, no more or less.  7/10

bloop and Dv: I missed ya'll's day two selections. Anyway you can put 'em up so I can dl-ed 'em and take a gander? Thanks.

Those of you who haven't heard Sufjan Stevens yet, but were wanting to check him out, now is your chance.
Sufjan Stevens - "In The Devil's Territory" is my Day 4 song.  Download it even if you aren't participating in the Frenzy.
