I'm speechless... An early, track-by-track review of Ohio! It's got loads of typos (they should be fixed soon), but oh, wow... I'm more excited about this album than any other album that I can remember. In the words of this critic, "I'm convinced God invented vowels so Karen could sing them."

Oh Josh...let's just let the record speak for itself. It'll probably make my top ten. Number one is pretty stiff competition, and previous albums I don't think are as good as you make them out (but I guess crazy does more for me than folky in general), but I wouldn't rule it out because I do like them.
I also have to confess that the double album thing makes me hesitate a bit...there's only a few spectacular double albums in the history of album-making. It's just hard to make it diverse enough to be interesting, and tight enough to really be an album. That said, I'm buying this one when it comes out.

The double album thing made me hesitant at first, too. And, after reading the review, I still wonder if maybe a few songs could have been trimmed off. But it still sounds excellent, and, since I liked Films for Radio better than this critic did, it's very possible that I'll like Ohio more, as well.
So yeah, I'm preordering it as soon as they get the information up on the site.
And it'll probably make my #1 this year, unless the new Innocence Mission is a real knockout (which it very well could be).

I have only heard a couple Over the Rhine songs and that was in my 10th grade Bible Class. I trust and hope all of you have good taste and music (and it appears you do!), so I am looking forward to Ohio as a starter for perhaps a soon to be Rhinelander. And a double album will be good. First installation of OtR and 2 discs. Seems like a great deal to me. --Afroboy PS: If I can't wait 'til Aug 19, is there a good starter album I should get online first?

Okay, I just downloaded "Show Me," and man... pure heaven! It's a sunny, summertime pop song, with a healthy dose of country and an Eve-like guitar solo thrown in for good measure. Fantastic song.
....oh, and Karin has never sounded better.

Yes, just beautiful. If these mp3s are any indication of even the quality of one disc of this album, then Radiohead's in hot water for the #1 spot, and that's saying something coming from me. I'm not saying they're better than the songs on HTTT, but I will say that they're different enough and good enough to potentially make it hard to decide for me. (one of those years that I have to choose an apple or an orange for #1 spot, and both seem so delicious to me).
slide guitar technique...I just love it.

Did you download the other two besides "Show Me"? My dial-up connection was especially slow last night so I just got the one. Looking forward to getting the other two at some point today!

I've never really been into mellow/earthy music (I'm afraid to say it, but Sixpence NTR just doesn't push my buttons), but these guys sound great. Or maybe I'm just getting old and my taste is mellowing out...

You no like Sixpence? I like 'em, though I think Divine was too pop-flavored for my liking. Oh yeah, I downloaded the three songs from Ohio. But I think I'll wait to post my opinion. I'd rather not get shot now. (This also gives me a chance to hear them again. Let them grow a bit perhaps?) I will tell you this though, just as some of you have an aversion of rap, I don't like country flavored stuff very much. Anyway...I'll slink away now. And wear a disguise.

Yeah, it's got a dash of country in it, but it's ultimately a pop song, I think. Not as good as "Suitcase," but still first-rate. In my opinion, of course.

Hey. Listening to Suitcase right now. I'm digging it now. The melody is really pretty. And I like the piano backing up Karin. It's cool. =) Oh yeah. At Relevant, they mentioned that those who pre-order Ohio get a signed copy and a hand-inserted treat... That's enough to entice me! If there are more songs of Suitcase quality, I'll buy.

Ooooh. Nobody Number One. I like this one, too. I especially like the gospel "yelling" Karin does. Almost takes me back to church, when one of the choir women gets the mic and really get into it. Okay. I think Over the Rhine's won me over, now. =)

I listened to all the songs, and while I thought they were good, I'm still not feeling the enthusiasm about OtR the way you guys are. Films has grown on me a bit, but I still prefer Sixpence for my female fronted band needs. I'll probably pick up Good Dog, Bad Dog, since it seems to be one of OtR's classic albums, but I don't sense the greatness in them the way Josh seems to.

I think Karin is a superios vocalist to Leigh Nash, and Linford trumps Matt Slocum at a lyricist. And OtR certainly display more musicianship than either of the overproduced Sixpence albums that I have (Divine Discontent and the self-titled one). Their range of sounds, influences, textures, and ideas is much broader and more eclectic than Sixpence, The Innocence Mission, and any other female-fronted band I know of.
Good Dog is a better album than Films, though Films is my personal favorite.

I hear ya, Dv. While I have liked what I've heard, and I think OtR is good, I dunno if they excite me like other of my favorite bands. And I do have to say, I think I like Sixpence better. Even though OtR may be better musically, I find Sixpence more accessible. Their music is just more enjoyable for me. Maybe OtR's music is too slow? Too much country flavor? Too much vibratto? (I like it to a point and then it gets annoying.) I'm not sure, just throwing ou things. I dunno. I'm moody about music. But I can see where Dv is coming from. Just thought I'd say that so you wouldn't feel all isolated and alone in your opinion, Dv.

Just thought I'd say that so you wouldn't feel all isolated and alone in your opinion, Dv. Ah, good, I thought I was going crazy! Anyways, I have this ideal of what beautiful music with a female singer should sound like. The closest I have ever heard to my ideal is Sixpence's This Beautiful Mess. I can't explain it, but something about the whole sound of Leigh's voice and the arrangments are just really, really special to me. I was expecting Over the Rhine to capture this same kind of sound, but they don't. Its missing something, and when I can figure out the words to describe it, I'll let you know. It has something to do with innocence and simpleness, I think. I'm not making sense, am I. Oh well, I'll figure it out.

I haven't heard Beautiful Mess. But I do have Divine and Sixpence. I really like Sixpence (the album). There's something about it. Songs like Last Song (or whatever track 8 it is), the Spanish one (her pronounciations aren't the best, but that's okay), and yes, I like Kiss Me. I think it's a great pop song. Yes, I said a great pop song. Yes, I am a guy. And yes, I am secure in my masculinity.
Anyway. OtR is talented and good. But so far they have not captured my heart as Sixpence has. (We'll have to see what happens when I get one of their albums.)

You should buy This Beautiful Mess. It's really good. I like it better than Divine Discontent, actually. There is a package called the Mega 3 pack or something that gives you The Fatherless and the Widow, This Beautiful Mess, and Tickets for the Prayer Whell(an EP), for the price of one album. The drawback is that you don't get the album art.

Sixpence and OtR are both very good female-fronted groups. I tend toward OtR a bit more at this point, but "innocense" doesn't matter much to me as one of my favorite female artists is PJ Harvey (if you know her usual subject matter, you understand me here).
