Thanks to David for pointing me toward this exciting link. Notice that, in the picture, both guitarists are using acoustics; hopefully this album won't be so pristine and polished as Eleventh Hour was. Intriguing title, as well.

I wonder if they've figured out yet that repeating the same thing over and over is not an acceptable alternative to a chorus?

That Audio Adrenaline dude bugs me for some reason.
He always has.
Can't wait for the new Jars album.
Peace out, Andree

Mmmhmm, the sound of the studio disc in the Furthermore set was excellent. Laid back yet intense, and always soulful. Good stuff. Let's pray for more of it.

Yeah, I like "Redemption" better than the Gene Eugene cover and that "Valley Song" or whatever. Heck, I like it more than half of the classic songs on that disc... "Overjoyed" still kicks arse, though.

The late Gene Eugene was a member of several pioneering CCM alternative bands, including Lost Dogs and Adam Again. He was also a prolific producer. He wrote "Dig," which Jars cover on Furthermore.

I felt that Furthermore messed up almost if not every song on there. But that's just me. I'm not digging the whole "forced coffeehouse rock" thing. Much Afraid 2 before more of that please.

I don't think much of the studio disc felt forced; in fact, I loved the "live in the studio" vibe it had. Some of the songs would have been better left untampered with, I guess, but I vastly prefer it to a traditional Greatest Hits album.

Do you mean you hope it's an acoustic album with songs like the acoustic songs from "Jars of Clay"? Not all of their first album was acoustic, but I want a mix anyway. Listening to too much acoustic music will mellow me too much, and I always fear really getting old to the point that I don't like any of that "danged electric noise". Whippersnappers!

"Overjoyed" still kicks arse, though. Overjoyed is a great song. I thought their first album was great, contrating mellow, introspective ballads with lively string arrangements on great songs like "Boy on a String." I thought "Liquid" and "Sinking" are two great kickoff songs, although 'This is the one thing, the one thing that I know' gets old after a while and introduces my main problem with their lyrics early on...

The problem with their first album is the dinky production; those tinny drum loops are sooo irritating! That album already sounds older than some 80s albums that I have... I think If I Left the Zoo will age much better.

Maybe they should re-record their first album, with real drums and better production, and some different arrangements. I would buy something like that, if it was done well.

I know the feeling Interestingly, though, drummers seem to everywhere. I know some very talented drummers who would be glad to participate in a project like that. But maybe that's just me. Anyway, I'm glad that Jars is still cranking them out, and I'm looking forward to hearing what they do with this new one.

I loved the chemistry between the musicians on the Furthermore studio disc; it's a far cry from the boring sounds of "Fly" and "I Need You." Of course, The Eleventh Hour also had two of their very best songs, "Silence" and "Something Beautiful"...

Peace out, Andree Is he the touring drummer or something? Anyways, maybe we should be wishing for a complete reinvention from Jars. Maybe they will go the electronic route, like U2 and Radiohead before them. Actually, I think they would stink at that. How about....BLUEGRASS! =D Seriously, I'm hoping for another Furthermore studio disk, with all new songs this time.

I don't want another Furthermore, I don't like them doing the "stripped down to basics" things. My favorite album is Much Afraid, a very non-basics album. Another Much Afraid before another Furthermore any day of the week, month, year, decade, century, or millenium.

Along with proving you are indeed insane.
A guess the album is ok, but it's like some extreme form of torture for me to listen to. In my opinion, it's just a bad album, the only good part being the production level. But that's just me.

I've recently decided that If I Left the Zoo is my favorite Jars album. Boy does that put me in the minority! Yes, that does. Its not torture by any means, but it certainly has some quirks to it that I haven't quite gotten used to. But on the whole, its still a solid album. My favorite Jar's album is their debut, despite the drum machine. The songs on it are just such classics, in my mind.

I don't think the song is all that great, but it's one that I sometimes catch myself humming the chorus to at odd moments. I like the scheme and flow of it even if the album has many more solid tracks. Plus, I'm the guy who never reviews music because I don't know anything about it. You should EXPECT me to like songs that turn you off

Actually "If I Left the Zoo" is by far my favorite album by Jars, too. I'm surprised that "Much Afraid" is the rival here, too. I'd pick their first and Eleventh Hour for second and third place and put Much Afraid down the list.

Welcome to the board, Betis. =)
Much Afraid is their most poetic and symphonic work, I think. The production and songwriting are better than the first Jars album, and Eleventh Hour is too polished and poppy for my tastes. And, overall, it's got some pretty bland songwriting, as well. Just my $.02.

I'm confused about Furthermore. Just what kind of album is it? I might have to buy it with what I'm reading. I thought it was just another greatest hits CD. And I hate greatest hits CDs.
I am pleased to announce that Jars of Clay is now my favorite band... by the way...
My favorite CD of theirs is Much Afraid, although the four that I have are all incredible... there are very few songs that I even dislike at all, and I can't think of any that I skip on a regular basis.
Can't forget "These Ordinary Days" from Eleventh Hour... that's my favorite number on that CD.
The article said their new one was their sixth studio release. So was Furthermore counted as number five?

Ok, Futhermore is not a greatest hits album. It has two disks, one studio disk, and one live disk. The studio diisk contains new versions of old songs, and a couple new ones. They are all in an accoustic style. The live disk is just that, a live concert recording. It doesn't have any new songs. I think its worth picking up, if you like Jars of Clay.
