Okay, I'm totally excited about seeing the movie coming out this Friday called, Seabiscut. Does anyone have comments on how they expect it to turn out, or anything to warn me about before I go see it?

The previews disappoint; they make the film look like a highly sentimental, warm and fuzzy, feel-good film that was probably built from the same How to Win an Oscar Kit that gave us A Beautiful Mind and Gladiator. Having said that, the true story of Seabiscuit is GREAT, and the strong cast might make the film a real knockout, assuming that it doesn't get as syrupy as the previews make it look.

I don't like Tobey Maguire, I don't particularly like animal movies, and I don't like sentimental dramas with a scrappy underdog, a Hollywood romance, and a syrupy ending. So when I saw the preview, I sighed and gave it no further thought. Josh is a bit more optimistic about how it might turn out than I am, but assuming they don't inject too much Hollywood into it (though what are the chances of that ) it could be decent.

as an equestrian myself, i'll probably just have to go see it, regardless of quality. (i don't have high hopes for it...but there might be a few good racing scenes.) it's embarrassing, but i have a real soft spot for sappy horse flicks.
i wonder if tobey maguire actually has any horse skill.

Since I don't really like horses, I don't think I will be seeing the film, unless I hear its really good.

It still blows my mind that a movie about a horse can be rated PG-13 for sexual situations. These kids today...

Well, Jess and Vlad! managed to change a light-hearted discussion of an upcoming film in an extremely disturbing discussion of an upcoming film. I must say, I'm impressed.

*Points at Jess* It was her! I was just...responding to it Besides, neither of us said anything about a, er, human/animal liason. It was JOSH who brought that in.

I wasn't thinking of it like that! Vlad! and Josh are the resident sickos. I was referencing the parental guidance suggestion and merely suggesting there might be disturbing contact between Seabiscut and a mare friend.

That's what I was saying too, though I realize that my comment (and intentionally so, I admit) was a bit of a double entendre that could have suggested something far more disturbing.

Well my dad saw the film today, and thought it was an excellent film. Rates right up there with Chariots of Fire. So I need to see how well my dad's taste is now...

ok, this is my first post, make me feel welcome B) Anyway, I wanted to give my take on the film. I liked it...a lot. To give ou an idea of how this works for me - I loved Pirates, I liked Charlie's Agels, and Reloaded was ok. Maybe that wil tell you something. If not, I don't care. I thought Maguire did a good job in this movie. It was sentimental at times, but not overly so. Best line in the movie "You don't throw away a whole life just cuz it's banged up a little." I thought this was a good story of overcoming the odds and the expectations of others - that's the main reason I liked it.

Welcome I think a film needs more than sentimentality to go far, but the oscar committe doesn't appear to agree.

Ho-Hum!! Josh, your sadly mistaken. I thought it was one of the best movies I've seen in a looooonnnnngggg time! I liked the touch of building on the characters before even introducing the horse, Seabiscut. I never figured out why Seabiscut was named Seabiscut though. I liked the race sences, they were good nail-biters like Josh said. I didn't get board at any point in the movie, but maybe that's because I like movies like this.

Really? Well, that's interesting; I was usually bored out of my mind. You can guess how every scene will end, how every conflict will be resolved. And I was incredibley annoyed with all the manipulation going on, like the uber-explicit camera work, the bombastic soundtrack, the way Bridges kepy playing with his son's toy. Arrgh. My full review is a bit different from the one I posted above. You can read it here.
