Simple question.  I don't like really any hip-hop/rap(is there a difference?)/R&B stuff, but all I've heard is from the radio.  If 50 Cent and Ashanti are the best there are, I weep for the genre.  So, what's the good stuff?  Why do you like this kind of music?  I've tried, but I can't get myself into it.  So, any help would be great. =D

It's a genre that tries my patience as well- rap songs all sound the same! Two hip-hop albums that I can at least appreciate, though, (if not quite enjoy), are Lauryn Hill's works, Miseducation and Unplugged. Those are the best I've heard.

MaryMary!!!!!

Yes, MaryMary to the rescue. In my opinion, they are *the* best R&B/gospel group (they are Christians and have many black church musical influences--ahh, good clappin', stompin' praise music) out there right now.

They are a sister duo. They write their own songs (and amazing songs they are). They have wonderful harmonies. And they paint wonderful pictures of faith.

They have two albums out. Thankful and Incredible. There hit single was "Shackles". The single was big on the R&B charts (yes secular, but the R&B scene is different than the rock scene in that respect).  I reeeeeally like them. Which album is better? Oooh. I dunno. Incredibe has more songs on it.  But Thankful is just a solid record. (Incredible is more spread out.) Good songs on Thankful: Shackles, I Can't Give Up Now, Joy, Wade in the Water. They're pretty diverse. The songs sound different.

Personally, I don't like rap. I'm more of a hip hop person--there's not much of a difference, I guess. I would say hip hop is more musical. I do like Lauryn Hill. La Symphony's good from what I've heard. I'm not big into this music genre, but I'm delving more and more into it. Destiny's Child is good too, but I don't have any of their music.

Ooh, I just thought of someone else to suggest. Time to start a new topic.  Wink

Anyway. MaryMary. Great stuff. Period.

Although not an artist, Timbaland is pretty good.

hmm....although I don't know if you would normally classify these as 'rap/hip hop' artists, but the Beastie Boys, Rage Against the Machine, and even Beck to some extent all are excellent in the way they combine hip hop influences with rock n roll spirit.  But as far as mainstream rap goes (or whatever you want to call it) there have been some talented artists....Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur, and Biggie Smalls were all recognized as innovators of the genre (basically popularizing gangsta rap IMO) but I have to admit that Outkast is a guilty pleasure of mine  =D

I was about to mention POD and Linkin Park, but they don't really fit into this category. No, not really at all. They just scream a lot.  Wink

i would also recommend lauryn hill's albums, but the unplugged one definately isn't a good introduction to hip-hop in general...  (still happens to be one of my all-time favorite albums, tho')..

i also like dmx, and LOVE his 'the great depression' cd...

if the language bothers you though, lauryn hill's miseducation cd is probably better anyway...

What he said...

Also, you should check out the Roots, a hip hop BAND, they actually play their own instruments.  And, Blackalicious is a good one to check out...

To go back to the early 90's, A Tribe Called Quest made some great music...the perfect fusion between jazz and hip hop.  They are generally regarded as one of the most "artful" hip hop groups to come out...

R&B wise, Tonex is a good one to check out.

And, to wrap it up, I'll just throw some hip hop names out there...John Reuben, Talib Kweli, Pigeon John, Mos Def...

I have an extra Playdough album if anybody wants it.

Peace out,
Andree

PS:  Mad props to Paul... you've come a long way since your "John Reuben only" days, dude... lol.   I mean, you're listening to Talib Kweli and ATCC now.  That's pure class.

Thanks Andree...yeah, I've come a long way since my "if it's not Christian music, it's evil" days...

Thanks to bloop, murlough, eschachame, and a couple others at the cmcentral boards who helped me see how ignorant I was...I've grown a lot since then...I think... unsure

Anyways...I'd take that Playdough album  =D .  I have Ill Harmonics, but no Playdough.

Never heard Playdough before. I'd like to check him out. John Rueben...eh, I've never been impressed with him. Toby Mac's not really good either.

Hey, I'm not saying white boys can't rap. Don't get me wrong. Eminem has quite the lizard's tongue, you know...  Wink

Reuben is pretty clever with his words, and he's one of the few rappers whose songs don't run together and sound homogenous to me. as for Toby Mac, though... bleck.  :P

Thanks for the welcome....

I thought you were TheFly...wasn't 100% positive, however.  Now I know for sure.

Also, if you want some different hip hop...try out Furthermore...Russ from Christianity Today described it as a mix between Beck, John Reuben, Beastie Boys, and Dido...

He also said, "this is definitely not for everybody, but do consider it if you're looking for extremely unique, unusual, artistic, and original "trip-hop."

Yeah, Furthermore is trip-hop at its finest. They're to me and Paul (cbluejays) kinda like OtR is to Josh...our favorite musical secret...

alright look.

the same can be said for any of the parent genres in music.

First.  there are many sub-genres nestled beneath the over-arching blanket of Hip Hop/R&B . . .
Each sub-genre has it's good, bad, and ugly . . .same as every other type of music.

second.  your position appears to be from the seat of antagonism.  basically, "i don't like hip hop, it sucks, try to prove me wrong."  that's garbage.  i don't care to try.

if, however, you are interested in what hip hop has or hasn't to offer . . . pick up some mix tapes or compilations for the strictly straight-eighths crowd . . .

UpRok Records offers a pretty decent Mix Tape with a lot of underground-type rap, DJ Maj's Ringleader is a pretty good representation, as well as Night Owls (vol. 1 & 2) . . .   if you can listen to all those and not like any of it, then you probably don't like hip hop . . .

oh, and one more thing . . .

your comment on 50 Cent and Ashanti . . .
saying "if they're the best ..."  because they get more airplay . . .
that's like saying Limp Bizkit is the best rock has to offer because they get way more airplay than U2, RadioHead etc . . .

it is not a revolutionary thought to realize that radio is crap . . .

peace . . .
love . . .
bdg . . .

Ouch.   Sad  No, I wasn't trying to be antogonistic at all.  The attitude that I was trying to convey was "I want to be opened minded about music, but I can't seem to find any quality hip-hop on the radio to judge the genre by.  Where is the good stuff?"

It's probably the genre I least like, but there's some good stuff to be sure, much of it listed here.

Blackalicious...I like them.  Also, Erykah Badu is a pretty good soul sista (ok, I'm frontin', but she's good).  I actually think "Lose Yourself" and "Stan" are pretty good songs even though they're from Eminem.  "The Chronic" and "Straight Outta Compton" are both pretty solid gangsta rap, but it's hard for me not to laugh at them with songs like "F the Police" etc.  Oh, and Wyclef Jean is good, too IMO.  That is the extent of my knowledge.  End feed.
