I rewatched Lost in Translation last night and after it was over, I pondered for quite a while what Bob might have whispered to Charlotte at the end of the movie. Anyone have any creative ideas on what they like to imagine was said? Or do I just think a bit too much?

I like to think that it was a simple, heartfelt thank you.

But we'll never really know...

I just read someone post their conjecture about what Bob might have said, and I really like it: "It will get better."

That's a satisfying one.

I really like not knowing what is said between them at the end. It's a moment of subtlety that most performers and directors would've bashed over the head trying to encapsulate the film into one epic line of dialogue. But it's like the rest of the film - a quiet and personal moment.

Actually, Coppola did script something for him to say. So there. :P But ultimately she decided it was more powerful if you didn't hear what he said, because that way the audience can co-create meaning in it. Which is more powerful than if he'd said say "I had a good time and I wish I could stay but bye. I'll always love you." or something like that.

I still don't understand why you always bash LiT, Linds, especially since right after we saw it you talked about how awesome it was. I think you're fallen prey to the "everyone likes it so I've got to mock it" virus. Wink

Bethany is correct, as she usually is, except when she's disagreeing with me.  =)

Coppola shows more restraint in her filmmaking than... um... any other American director that I know of, and the whispering thing is just another example of that.
