saw the trailer for J. Edgar. I am loving the cast.

DiCaprio - J Edgar Hoover
Judi Dench - Hoover's mom
Josh Lucas - Charles Lindbergh
Jeffrey Donovan (Burn Notice lead) - Bobby Kennedy
Dermot Mulroney
Naomi Watts
Armie Hammer
Lea Thompson

etc.  I definitely want to see this

Saw a trailer for the Blue Like Jazz movie between acts at the Gungor concert on Friday. I'm interested.

They're making a movie for Blue Like Jazz?

I see no way that such a thing could turn out well.

Obviously it has a plot whereas the book is a string of essays not connected by any direct plot. The disadvantage is that it could turn out to be like the book in name only, but the advantage is that you won't get the usual gripes that the movie doesn't have the exact same plot elements as the book. (Full disclosure: I haven't read the book.)

Steve Taylor is also directing the movie. That piques my interest. I don't know if he wrote the screenplay, though.

The book was extremely transformative for my younger self, and I actually just bought a copy to re-read.

(See this post and this thread for more on the book).

At best, the movie will be an entirely-unrelated but worthwhile film capitalizing off the name of the book to lure folks who found it similarly profound.

To be fair, the plot of the movie (sheltered Christian kid goes off to college and has his views challenged) looked interesting before I had any idea what the film was called.

Vlad - Don Miller's been very involved in the production of Blue Like Jazz, and I'm actually pretty optimistic that it will capture the "feel" of his book even if the plot is different (since as has been mentioned already, there really isn't a single plot per so to his book).

Pretty cool outline of how the movie came to be: http://www.bluelikejazzthemovie.com/about

It's also worth noting that this is one of the highest-budget films to be funded via Kickstarter. Clearly some folks who were a fan of the book had faith in what they were doing here.

Watched the trailer...

So I guess it's like Community for the big screen?

Sure, if you have an extremely superficial understanding of what Community is about.

Which I do, given that I've only seen one episode.

Well, Community isn't really like what it appears to be on the surface, and I'd guess something similar about Blue Like Jazz, except in a very different way. College is just the setting.

Alright, now that I've actually seen Blue Like Jazz, I may have to retract this comment. More in the "Last movie you saw" thread.
