This should always be the most recent instructions for connecting to the Pub, so long as the loyal pubbites continue to nag me to update it The Pub is an FTP server where Phorum users can trade songs that they are intererested in. The idea is that, if you like an artist, you upload a couple of his or her songs to the Pub for us all to listen to. Rather than encouraging piracy, it should be viewed as a "try before you buy" system, so that you can see if this artist that the others are hyping so much is really for you. The Pub is currently hosted off my desktop computer here in my apartment. Although I don't have a static IP, DynDNS has provided me with a subdomain you can use to connect. Verizon likes to play games with port 21, so the most reliable port to use is port 2121. The info: server: cosmicinterlude.boldlygoingnowhere.org port: 2121 user: phorum password: public Make sure you type the user and pass in exactly as printed. If for whatever reason this doesn't work for you, an HTTP frontend is also available at this site. I wrote it myself so don't be surprised if it doesn't work Since I turn my computer off at night, the Pub is likely to be unavailable from about 21:30 (9:30 PM) to 06:00 EST. This time frame may move around a bit, as I am a student so my schedule is a bit erratic. Happy Pubbing!

Cool. Hopefully this will work OK, and we can get back to the sharing. Meanwhile, we can keep pestering Josh about the possibility of setting up a more permanent Pub on his space. Question: Can everyone here play .ogg files? Most of my music is in this format, so it would be great if I could just share it this way.

Sorry Danny. I was tired, and when the log said your download had finished I shut the computer down By the way, what kind of speeds are your guys getting? My ISP doesn't publicize their bandwidth rates (because they suck, most likely), so I'd be interested in hearing how fast it's going. Not like I can do anything about it if it's crawling along, of course

for downloads, I'm generally getting 37-57 Kb/s.
..wait, my isp disconnected, and after reconnecting, I'm getting from 60-72 Kb/s.
uploading, I got between 40-42 Kb/s.
the track I put up is "Shelter Me", one of Buddy Miller's new songs. it was recorded at a Sweet Harmony Traveling Revue show, and Patty Griffin sings backup. Buddy and/or Patty fans should really check it out.

One benefit of this is that I get to play all the songs without having to download them ^_^

And by the way, my ISP (NTC Communications) it not what I would call reliable...if you can't connect in the middle of the day, either I'm rebooting (rare) or NTC is down. Try again after about 15 minutes and it should work fine. Apologies to you night owls on the west coast for whom my normal power-down time falls around 20:00. I would leave my PC on all the time, but it gulps power and makes more noise than it has any business making.

By the way, if you have a high-quality (e.g. 256 or 320 kbps) song, feel free to upload it as-is rather than reencoding it, especially not to 128. 128 is destruction

If you have specific questions about how to use ftp, you can PM me or post them here...a lot of good FTP clients do the work for you, so it's not like you have to type the commands yourself. Though if you want to, then: from the command prompt: ftp 65.164.233.169 At username prompt: phorum At password prompt: public ftp] ls ...directory listing follows... ftp] get songname.mp3 ...transfer information follows... ftp] put mysong.ogg ...transfer information follow... ftp] bye ...connection is closed...

Hmm...I don't want to throw a number out there, but I also don't want you pholks uploading your entire personal music libraries As long as you don't go crazy, go ahead and upload. It's not really space I'm worried about as much as ISP activity...NTC already hates me, so if I have a huge lot of MP3s that I'm serving on an FTP then they report me to the RIAA just to spite me for using their bandwidth and I get fined If your songs start "mysteriously disappearing" then you'll know you're uploading too much

you're very welcome, Josh. I was hoping you'd get to hear it. I had sent (or tried to send) you a pm with a link to a couple Buddy and Patty or Emmylou songs I had uploaded somewhere, but apparently you didn't receive it. the other song I have on the pub is "Revelator", by Gillian Welch. David Rawlings' guitar work amazes me every time I listen to it.

So, has anyone actually downloaded and listened to my song, or is the .ogg thing scaring you off? LMK, as I suppose I can always just encode in MP3 for the songs I need to upload instead of taking them from my collection.

I downloaded it and listened to it somewhere in the neighborhood of five times. Josh, you don't like "Who Is It?"? What kind of douchebag are you? That Bjork song is one of only two songs on her new album that I think would make a significant radio single (the other is "Triumph of a Heart").

The same kind as I am, I guess. I'm really having trouble getting into this one at all. Weird. (usually, we're in agreement). I love it - the all-vocal aspect and all. Are you all are taking crazy pills? You didn't catch my "douchebag" reference, though, did you? Read Josh's blog. (I misspoke earlier, kind of. I think Bjork's duet with Kelis on "Oceania" has some potential as a single, but it's not on the album in that form).

Can I just go into IE and type ftp://whatevertheipaddressis? You could be uber and use a command-line tool...just run a command shell and type in ftp IE will work (as will Firefox), but I don't really like the interface they use. I suppose it's better than nothing. FWIW, Filezilla doesn't add stuff to the registry, so you can just get the binaries and execute the program without running any installer. At least, that's worked for me.

Yay, someone else commented on one of my songs, although I'm not quite sure how to interpret 'wow. haha.' Their sort of electronic feel isn't for everyone (heck, half the time it's not really for me either), but I think that song is kinda spiffy. Having listened to it again, it's actually really catchy. Not something I'd listen to all the time, but pretty amusing once in a while.
