Is the Pub still down? I can log on today, but it hangs up at the "LIST" command.

I think I was able to repro this today. I signed on and for some reason it told me it could not open a data connection for the directory /. I signed off and back on, and then it took like a thousand years to retrieve the directory listing, but it did finally send it.

This might be a race condition on the part of the server software, or it might be Verizon misbehaving. It may also be that the disk containing the Pub directory went idle and spun down, so the OS had to spin it back up before it could get the directory listing (this is the same reason why you sometimes click a folder in Windows explorer and it inexplicably takes about five times the normal amount of time to load). I don't know how long you waited before you determined that the server had hung, but it's possible that this is the culprit as well.

I was going to upload that song but changed my mind at the last second. Good song.

I'm uploading four songs:

Switchfoot - "Dirty Second Hands" (Live Bootleg)
This is available as a bonus track on some version of Oh! Gravity.  The last minute and half are totally wild and unpredictable.  Great version of a great song.

Listener - "I Have Nothing But Attention When I Scream"
This is probably my favorite Listener song featuring his new style.  His new style is acoustic hip-hop.  As usual, his lyrics are amazing.

Anberlin - "Fin"
Ah, yes.  This is the new album-ending epic from Cities.  I was completely blown away the first time I heard it.  Anberlin plus a children's choir and, I believe, an orchestra?  Huh?  Believe me, it works.

Cool Hand Luke - "The Balancing Act"
Their new album is bit of a farce.  There are only a smattering of new songs and a lot of old ones - even ones from their wretched screamo days (blech).  This song is a new one, and it picks up where The Fires of Life left off.  Atmospheric and even spine-tingling in spots.

I uploaded two new tracks today:

Norah Jones, "Not My Friend" - Don't let the mellowness fool you; there's something a tiny bit more subversive going on here.

Andrew Bird, "Imitosis" - My favorite track from Bird's new album, for much the same reason that "A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left" was my favorite on his previous album.

NP: "Snow Angel", Ron Sexsmith

I'm uploading some Eleni Mandell songs for Valentine's Day. "Moonglow, Lamp Low", "Miracle of Five", and "Miss Me" are for slow dancing to with your sweetheart. bloop and dgp, if you haven't checked out the other Eleni stuff I had uploaded to the pub before (or even if you have), you should check these out. I just have the feeling you would enjoy them.
"My Twin" is a twisted, yet darkly hopeful song if slow dancing isn't your thing.

I'm trying to upload a couple Of Montreal songs.

(I'm seriously considering going from an A- to an A for the album, but the end of the album has to grow on me a bit.)

Oh, good choice, that's one of my favorites. (Actually, I think the first half of that CD is pretty much "perfect").

Does anyone know where I could find the iTunes only songs? I don't really want to buy the album again just for two new songs...

Yeah, I agree.  I'm still wrestling a bit with the second half.  All of it is less than pleasant if you're paying attention, but the latter half gets plain ugly.

Bloop, the song you uploaded was on the radio late last week, and I thought it was fairly nifty. I'll give it another listen to see how I feel about it on closer inspection.

I'm also uploading the bonus tracks from Anberlin's new album for those who bought the regular edition.

Just FYI, the Pub will be down next week due to spring break. There will also be intermittent outages throughout March, as I will be traveling a bit. More news as it develops.

New uploads today:

Dustin Kensrue, "I Knew You Before" - I hated the solo album, for the most part, but I do enjoy this track. It's simple acoustic rock, but it's memorable. (I was going to upload this for the last round of SGTC, but every time I tried, the Pub was down. Sorry, my timing's just really bad.)

John Reuben, "Focus" - As a counterpoint to the amusing "Make Money Money", this is a more introspective track from Reuben's latest album that has been haunting me a bit due to those creepy kids in the chorus.

Nina Gordon, "Suffragette" - A small slice of chick rock to help y'all with the current round of SGTC.

The Wreckers, "One More Girl" - I've been listening to this album a lot lately, and this slow, moody song is actually one of the better tracks with attitude, a bit more harsh but also more mature than most of what Branch and Harp wrote for the album. It was written by one of those Patties who writes folk/country music... either Smith or Griffin. I forget at the moment.

Toby Mac, "All In" - A surprisingly laid-back ballad in the vein of dc Talk's "Godsend" or "Consume Me", or something that Tait might come up with. Not rocket science, but it's pretty. The interlude at the end amuses me greatly.

Toby Mac feat. Tru-Dog, "Hype Man" - The requisite "Tru-Dog" interlude from Toby's latest. It amuses me even more greatly.

Oooo!  Creepy kid choruses!  I have a lot to look forward to when I finally listen to this one this week (yes, I need to start - I realize this).

Deleted the Copeland and The Be Good Tanyas stuff I uploaded and uploaded four songs from a indie hip-hop album I found, Animate Objects- Riding In Fast Cars With Your Momma. And yes, there is some language if you're sensitive to that kinda stuff.

If you just get one, get The Battle of Now. Wow.

TheWanderer might like this one... and anybody else that likes hip-hop really.

I uploaded two songs.

A song by Alli Rogers, Liar's Dream, it was a standout from her live album and the studio version is basically the same, just without the guy introducing her.

And Fire On The Mountain by Hanson, from my critic pick this round.

Wait, never mind, I got in.

I uploaded the following songs today:

Meg & Dia: "Masterpiece" and "Rebecca". Dreamy sister-powered girlie-rock, somewhat like Eisley.

Lost Ocean: "Dreams" and "Lights". Slightly arty piano rock. Kind of a halfway point between Mae and Cool Hand Luke.

Barenaked Ladies: "Beautiful" and "Fun & Games". Y'all know who these guys are. The first song is a surprisingly observant and sensitive one; the second is tongue-in-cheek in the most audacious, "Oh-no-they-didn't!" sort of way.

Autoban is disabled. However, for each failed login attempt, it will take progressively longer on subsequent attempts (this is by design, to make it infeasible to try a brute-force attack). Eventually it will take so long that your connection will time out before your command is executed.

That's probably what happened. I was logged in and then my Internet connection went bad, so I don't know if those repeated login attempts before I realized the problem was me and not you (Gmail suddenly logged me out and then I got the picture) still went through when my connection came back up, like pinching a fire hose or something.

Thanks for doing that, and best of luck to you - for me today the Pub is slower than any of the plotlines that people might actually care about on Lost.

Because they haven't released an album yet. They're apparently about to be signed to Timbaland's label on Interscope though and will have an album out this year.
