Man oh man.

It's official; 2004 is the best musical year I've ever had, hands-down. Today I heard Buddy Miller's new alum and was floored by it. This makes at least five new releases that are destined to become all-time favorites.

This is soulful, inspiring stuff, and some of these songs are powerful enough to bring tears to my eyes, but don't make the mistake of thinking that this is some kind of delicate, touchy-feely folk album; this is fiery, edgy stuff, a volatile mix of country, rock, and gospel. Miller's singing and guitar playing are scorching, and the gospel singers that back him up are sensational.

And did I mention that the songs are very, very good? Many of them were co-written by Buddy and wife Julie, but he also throws in a few great covers, including an epic, slow-burning version of Dylan's "With God on Our Side." It's one of the best songs of the year.

This is doubtlessly an A/A+ level album, and one that you should all hear IMMEDIATELY. Forget Loretta Lynn... THIS is the must-hear country recording of 2004.

(Thanks to Schil, by the way, who has been trying for ages to get me hooked on Buddy Miller. I'm glad I finally listened!)

I haven't bought the cd yet--I've still been listening to the Sweet Harmony performances of a few of Buddy's new songs. currently my favorite is Wide River to Cross (with Emmylou on background vocals).
