Over the Rhine is playing at a benefit for John Kerry. Story here.

Also, a new album-- this time just one disc-- is slated to release in March! Woo hoo!

Oh, phew. I thought for a second that you were saying the new album would be called Vote for Kerry. I was thinking, "Wouldn't it be a bit late for that?"

Me too.  That would have been very lame.

That would be their first obnoxious, obsolete-on-arrival album title, so I think it'd be kind of funny (not that they should try that).

The OTR folks could just make the difference in Ohio.  It's supposed to be a pretty close "battleground" state.

Just got an e-mail with this news on the new album:

Quote
FROM KARIN & LINFORD:

Hello fellow travelers,

It's a rainy November Saturday night in Ohio. Big moon last night behind naked oak branches. Roaring fire in our back yard under crisp star-sprinkled sky. Tonight, cold and wet outside, so we sit in a warmly lit kitchen. And wouldn't you know, we're listening to our new record. Giving it a spin before it gets sent off for final mastering on Tuesday. We realized in the last few days that it's called 'BORN'.

We had been sketching and writing off and on for much of the year. Turns out we started recording for real on election day, and finished mixing on Thanksgiving Eve. A relaxed record made at home in this wooden house we call the Grey Ghost. Upright bass. Piano. Acoustic guitars. A few horns. A few subtle textures. A voice.

Karin and I stayed home more this year and felt the water in the well rise. We felt the seasons change close to home. There's a lot of love on this one.

Over the Rhine | BORN is set to be released March 29, 2005 on Virgin/Back Porch Records.

1. I Want You To Be My Love
2. Born
3. Drunkard's Prayer
4. Bluer
5. Spark
6. Hush Now (Stella's Tarantella)
7. Lookin' Forward
8. Little Did I Know
9. Who Will Guard The Door
10. Firefly
11. My Funny Valentine

***

We were driving the other evening and Karin said, Look at the sky: Winter is wrestling with Autumn.

And it went on for a few hours. A looming large moon. A circus of white clouds parading toward the horizon. A dark storm shadowing us a few fields over out the driver's side window.

Winter won and stomped its foot and said, I'm here to stay. It spit snow on Thanksgiving day. The hats and scarves and gloves have come out of hiding, which means it's time for us to bundle up once again and take our suitcases full of December songs on the road. Candlelit stages. Come-in-out-of-the-cold evenings together. Mulled wine, cigar smoke, laughter, love and all its possibilities, rosy girls with half-filled notebooks, boys with songs up their sleeves, music for sale, we wake up dreaming.

Dig out the crumpled up road map. Select a few close companions. Come find us. Say hello. It's not the same without you.

A little bit more info on Born. (This article calls the album Drunkard's Prayer, which I assume is outdated information).

Apparently, they're back to calling this Drunkard's Prayer.  From their latest e-mail:
Quote
Drunkard's Prayer, the new full-length cd from Over the Rhine is due to be released on Virgin/Back Porch Records on Tuesday, March 29, 2005. Much more on that soon. (We thought the record was going to be called Born for awhile, but then it switched back to the original title.)

Thanks for the update, Dv, and for changing the thread title.  =)

I hope they stick with Drunkard's Prayer. Personally, I like that one a lot better than Born.

Very excited.  I just got their newsletter.  Their playing in Philly and Lancaster, PA. in March..both close enough for me to go to...I hope neither of these concerts end up on the missed concerts thread for me.

Sounds like this one's going to be fabulously intimate.

Not that Ohio wasn't, or anything.

"Born" is my favorite of the two. The steel guitar is almost enough to make me weep.

I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but I think you react to the steel guitar in much the same way that I react to a fiddle or a banjo.

That would explain why I love Daniel Lanois so much, and why "Running to Stand Still" is one of my favorite U2 songs.

Then again, I can appreciate a good banjor from time to time, as well, which probably explains why "High Water" is one of my favorite Bob Dylan songs.

Running to Stand Still is a great song.  I sang it once in college and did it no justice.

I am so excited about seeing OTR in concert again, that I think I"m hallucinating.  Last night at dinner with a bunch of friends everyone was talking and I could have sworn someone said Over the Rhine, so of course I said, "Huh, Over the Rhine, what."    I was hearing things.  Noone had said anything about them.  They all started laughing, knowing I am such a big fan.  For the rest of the night, whenever the conversation started going downhill, someone would inevitably "break the ice" by saying, "So, as I was saying, Over the Rhine..." It's ok, it was a friendly mockery.

priceless.

I don't know if I can.

The CD comes with that annoying copy-protection technology most EMI-derived pre-releases come bundled with.  Legend has it this allows labels to trace any illegal encoding of their music.

I wonder if there's a way of bypassing this.
