Thom Jurek has a beautifully-written review of DP. Since I don't have it yet (and I did preorder [_[ ), I can't properly say I agree with him, but there seems to be some clear concensus on this one, as with most of their albums.

I found it to be a very accurate review. I hope people will delve into the rest of their collection after hearing this remarkable album. Over the Rhine has a rich history and just keeps amazing me. Like Josh said in an earlier post, pick an adjective...Amazing stuff. I have to say once again, seeing them live is really essential...although, this recording comes close to that experience for me. It is quickly becoming a favorite OTR album for me...and I have them all. I have a really huge respect and passion for this band. I'm sure you'll hear more from me later on this. np: Little Did I Know...wow

Another homerun for Jurek. In terms of his writing, the guy can do no wrong.
The more I listen to this album, the more I am convinced that it is their purest and most focused album yet, probably even more so than GDBD, definitely more so than Ohio. It's also their most intimate, their most personal, and their jazziest. It all adds up to another OtR masterpiece.
Anyone feel comfortable picking a favorite track yet? It's still too early for me to say, but right now I'd probably lean toward "Little Did I Know," with "Firefly" in close second.

Finally picked the album up at Tower yesterday. Cost me 20 bucks. Punks. I should have pre-ordered, but it looks like I still wouldn't have it.
Anyway, I'll let y'all know my thoughts on this one at the close of Second-Guess the Critic, Round 2.

Got my copy of DP in the mail today, along with Changes Come, which I took the opportunity to finally purchase.
I'm overcome with OTR musical goodness.

I bought the album on Tuesday. My initial thoughts is that it's good, but not their best album. Ohio seems to me to be their best album. I personally really like Films and think it's a very fine album. I don't know how DP matches up with GDBD... (I only have these four albums, btw.)
Detweiler's piano skills (and I'm speaking about his technical ability, here, from the perspective of someone who's played piano for 15 years) shine on this album. Hush Now is great. Berquist's voice is as strong as ever. I think where they fall short is the songwriting. Yes, it's good. Quite good. But even despite its sprawilng quality, Ohio still has stronger songs and I think Films is quite inventive. GDBD is solid in this department as well, but it's not necessarily my favorite.
But I love their move towards more jazzy textures. Karin has the voice for it and Linford the fingers.
And despite the fact that this album was recorded and mixed in their home, I feel it is very polished. This gives a more overall pop-shine quality and aesthetic to it. I don't know if this affects my feelings about it at all.
I'll have to give this one a few more spins before I put too much money on what I'm saying, but these are my feelings as of now. Oh, and my favorites are Born, Spark and Hush Now. I really like Little Did I Know a lot as well as well as Lookin' Forward. And excellent rendition of My Funny Valentine.

I definitely agree with you about Linford's piano playing, Afro. If Ohio was the pinnacle of Karin's career as a singer then Drunkard's Prayer is surely the highlight of Linford's career as a pianist. I think where they fall short is the songwriting. Yes, it's good. Quite good. But even despite its sprawilng quality, Ohio still has stronger songs and I think Films is quite inventive. GDBD is solid in this department as well, but it's not necessarily my favorite. The high points on Ohio are probably slightly higher than the high points here, but this album is more consistent. There aren't any throwaway songs here like there were in the back half of Ohio Disc 2. Drunkard's Prayer is a much more focused, lean and efficient album, perhaps even more so than GDBD.

I finally got my copy in the mail today after many angry thoughts towards the postal service. I've only listened to the album once so far but I really like it. Some of my favorite tracks are "Born", "Little Did I Know", and "I Want You To Be My Love". That's bound to change the more I listen to it, though. I echo Afro's praise of the piano/jazz elements, also. I'm a sucker for good piano...

Anyway, I might be able to catch them live again tomorrow night at Messiah College in Grantham, PA. I practically feel unworthy to get to see them twice on this tour.

Why not an A+, Josh? Just curious. Well, I don't really have any complaints about the album, except for the fact that "Lookin' Forward" sounds a bit out of place. I went with an A over an A+ for the simple reason that, while there's a lot to love about the album, I don't think it's quite extraordinary enough to warrant a perfect score. Plus, in my mind, Over the Rhine has made at least two records that are better than this one.

I think I'd put it right under Good Dog Bad Dog right now, but I'm still considering the very rare 10.0 (on a 10 point scale with half point increments). I know it'll at least be a 9.5 by me.

Just got home from seeing them live again. This time at Messiah College in Grantham, PA. They can even make a student union hush to silence.
My brother has liked them for a while, but I think tonight he gained a deeper appreciation for them. (before now he had only seen them live at Purple Door)
I made sure to write down the set list this time: **w/Kim Taylor
Faithfully Dangerous I want You to Be My Love Hush Now Bluer **Born- sounded soooo rich **Spark **Anything at All **Suitcase Goldrush...YESSSSSSS Summertime Ohio (karen on piano) All I Need Is Everything** Cruel and Pretty**
Encore: Latter Days

okay...I *must* make an effort to see them in concert. I don't mind going to concerts by myself, but I just haven't driven to the Hollywood area and I don't drive the freeway. mapquest gave me a simple alternative route though, and it's not like I'd have to ask for time off from work...so...

And I might be by myself (Christine can only ask for so many Saturdays off, and we already have one Saturday concert and a conference to go to in April). So feel free to look for me (or us) if you decide to go.

I'm assuming that's the entire album that was pubbed. I listened to it and it's wonderful. Honestly, it's the only OtR album I've ever heard all the way through. OtR doesn't get enough love up here in NY and I can never find their cds that aren't priced at like 17 or 18 bucks

Danny, have you been able to listen to Drunkard's Prayer yet? did your cd arrive? was your desperate cry for help an odd April Fools thing? *puzzled* Sorry, I haven't been on much lately and to be honest I haven't listened to all the songs on the pub. I did have a chance to listen to this album (thanks!) and I like the music. I don't think I like the recording though....I mean, it's an intimate album and all, but I'm not really sure it's a good intimate. It had a bit of demoish feel to me, like the mic wasn't close enough to the instruments or something. I dont know, maybe it'll sound better if/when Paste sends my CD. Sometimes lossless audio makes a big difference with me.
