They were in Omaha for a concert last week, and talked a little about their upcoming album (next March).
Basically, they took words of old English hymns from around the 17th and 18th Century, and created new melodies for the hymns. The one song from the album that they did in concert was called "God Will Lift Your Head" or something like that...I was a little disappointed, as that particular song seemed to hearken back to their 11th Hour album (similar to Disappear or Revolution), which is probably my least favorite album of theirs. But it was a pretty decent tune. They also said they will have a few spirituals in the album, and in the encore they performed "I'll Fly Away." I liked the music for that song much more, as it was more like what they did with WWAI.
At any rate, I'll most likely be checking it out when March comes around.

Yeah, you have the correct title. I'm not sure about how Eleventh Hour it is (or if i'd even count that as a bad thing), but from what i've heard they're planning on rocking a bit more on this one.
Andrew Osenga from Caedmon's Call makes a guest appearance, as does Sarah Kelly (on I'll Fly Away).

I hope it comes in an artfully designed digipak. Hymns albums sound better in digipaks, not cheap plastic cases.

Says I. I like it myself. In fact, at this point, I'd say it might even be my second favorite Jars album cover, after the Zoo one. Whether or not it fits with the mood of the music, though, remains to be seen.

I heard the new song, and also "I'll Fly Away", at the Billy Graham Crusade a few weekends back. They sounded pretty good to these ears.

Dan mentioned on Jarchives several other names which had been considered for the album title, including:
Slow Recovery Restoration God Will Lift Up Your Head: Hymns & Spiritual Songs Re-Inventions: hymns & spirituals
"Redemption Songs is where we landed...it was a marketing decision mostly. They felt like the title was the best blend of artistic and commercial impact...Oh the things we must think about that have little to do with the art of making music..."
While I'm glad they didn't end up with either God Will Lift Up Your Head (an unwieldy title if there ever was one) or the trite and predictable Re-Inventions, I'm slightly bummed that they didn't pick Slow Recovery. Essential's probably afraid we can't figure out it's a hymns album from that title. Idiots.

Dan is a great guy and Jars of Clay is an awesome band, but if he has to make decisions like that for "marketing" purposes, then it's time to get of of that label. It's clear that Essential is doing everything they can to keep them "weighed down" with commercial requirements. That's why we never got a full Christmas album, that's why the band almost got strong-armed into doing a "worship album", that's why we got such an incomplete tracklisting on Furthermore (actually, it would've been a conventional best-of, but the band wanted to be innovative and redo all the tracks, which is admirable, but still a revisionist bit of history if I ever saw one), and that's why any song with some actual tension in it never makes it to radio any more.
Essential's gotten too busy with crap like FFH and Overflow to understand the concept of art any more.

And Day of Fire, and Silers Bald, and Olivia...
I bet none of those (except DOF, maybe) gets a sophomore album, as it's Essential's custom.

Well, at least Caedmon's Call gave us a great record this year. I honestly didn't see that one coming, given that the record label would have been happy to let them off with so much less.

There is a tracklisting now:
1. I Need Thee Every Hour 2. I'll Fly Away 3. It Is Well 4. God Will Lift Up Your Head 5. God Be Merciful To Me... 6. Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder 7. On Jordan's Stormy Banks I Stand 8. Nothing But The Blood 9. Hiding Place 10. Jesus I Lift My Eyes 11. What Wondrous Love Is This 12. They Will Know We Are Christians By Our Love 13. Our Lord Is Crucified 14. Thou Lovely Source Of True Delight
A few of these don't seem to fit the direction they said they wanted to go with this album....I'm a bit worried.

Expound on that Daniel, if you would. I'd heard that they were going with mostly older and less well-known hymns, but a few of these are pretty well known ones that people have heard a lot recently. I figure the label must be partly to blame, but i don't know. It might be good yet, but i'm a bit disappointed to see "It Is Well" on there instead of more stuff that seemed to fit the description that Dan everyone all last year.

I only know four of those hymns myself, to tell you the truth, so I wouldn't say that they're really bowing to any sort of pressure on the song selection.

Well what he said wasn't set it stone so they can change things, can't they? Yes, but as a true fanboy, I'm not bright enough to know that. Kidding. Although i did assume that they'd stick to what they said they'd do....and from what he's been posting on jarchives, it seems like the label is behind the more recognizable songs being there (so they could have radio singles).

I think "Nothing But the Blood" is my new favorite Jars of Clay song. It's their most convincing and confident foray into American roots music yet... and egad! Are those the Blind Boys of Alabama I hear?!?
I like all three tracks, actually. Could this be Jars' best album yet? Who would have thought?

So... how is it? My assumption is a pre-order, with access granted to hear most of the album online before its release date. This may be the first JOC album that I don't get to hear before release date since If I Left the Zoo.

So... how is it? I work at a Christian radio station, so I got a pre-release. I LOVE it. I haven't listened through it a ton yet, but I think its beautiful and diverse musically and vocally. They are joined by Sarah Kelly, The Blind Boys, and Martin Smith on some of the tracks. "Thou Lovely Source" is amazing...heck, they all are. There are some inspiring liner notes, too. It may top my Jars list.

I got my copy a couple of days ago. It's definitely one of the best Jars album, but it is gonna be really tough to top Who We Are Instead and Much Afraid.
My only complaint is that I really don't care for their rendition of "It Is Well With My Soul" at all. It seems like they were forcing something that shouldn't have changed, IMHO.

Blame that on the record label, who forced them to do the song that way. And no, that's not hearsay. I had a very long phone conversation about it last fall with someone who had worked with the band personally.

Based on the few songs I've heard, and the clips, this will be a better album than I had thought. But the clip of It Is Well was awful sounding, beatles-esque though it was.
