Just curious... anybody have any favorite music critics/magazines/sites that are pretty reliable? I find it hard to find the right mixture of smart writing and opinions that I agree with, but my three favorite critics are:

David Martin and Andree Farias (TRB)
Jeffrey Overstreet (Looking Closer)

Rolling Stone has a lot of great writers, but not a lot of great critics. The Phantom Tollbooth isn't what it used to be. Relevant Magazine is hit and miss, as they are in everything else.

I agree with you on Andree Farias...not so sure about that David guy.  I mean, a good review for a Linkin Park album AND putting the tepid remix effort "Reanimation" high on a top of the year list.  Oh well, I hear he's pretty good at math, so he can't be all bad.   =D

I like a few of the reviewers over at www.pitchforkmedia.com, even though they tend toward elitist jackass (hey, so do I sometimes).

I like David Fricke at Rolling Stone.  He seems to be their reviewer that listens to the albums before reviewing them.  He's also good writing articles.

I'm a pretty good critic for myself, but not for anyone else really.

You guys shouldn't heap so much superfluous praise on that Andree dude.  He's just alright.  Sometimes he doesn't know what he's talking about.

I like Brent DiCrescenzo and Chris Ott from Pitchfork quite a bit.  There's this one guy that does hip-hop there that's pretty good, too (I forget his name).  Matt LeMay has his moments.

Hey, bloop... if I were to start a music website and sent you CDs for free, would you review them?  That Linkin Park-review-that-started-pretty-good but-then-deflated-after-a-couple-of-paragraphs that you posted over at CMC showed a lot of promise.

Would I get paid?  haha.

Hey!  It didn't deflate.     I just got tired of hearing myself, and didn't want to repeat my thoughts on the album over and over again, which would happen with a record that repeats itself almost throughout.   =)

In all seriousness, I'm not too interested in being a critic right now, but I'll take those CDs.   Wink

Andree, was that purely hypothetical, or are you really starting your own publication? WHAT'S THE MATTER? THE BASE NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU, PUNK?

I wasted the best half a year of my life on you...
