Has anyone else listened to Thrice's latest album, Vheissu? It's an interesting case of a hard-edged mainstream rock band trying to do something more artsy. Supposedly there's Christian imagery running throughout the album, and one of the tracks was even inspired by C. S. Lewis (according to my brother, who is not a Christian and wouldn't make such a claim if it were unfounded). I'm currently digesting it, and it's an interesting listen thus far. This sounds like the kind of music that wish Cool Hand Luke would make (thematically, I can get into CHL, and it sounds like Thrice is going for a theme similar to what you might find on a CHL album, but I think most of CHL's music is boring).
I think that Wildcat and maybe NinjaRob would find this album interesting.
NP: "Atlantic", Thrice

Their last album has a song called "The Abolition of Man" which rips quotes directly from said Lewis book. Pretty decent song, and not a bad band.

yeah, I keep meaning to give this album a closer listen. I really like what I've heard. . . I'll have to track down a stream of it I found online once. The songs from the last album were pretty strong . . . my favorites being "All That's Left" and "Paper Tigers."

NP: "I Got a Woman (live)", John Mayer I could've made the remark legitimately (though from Wanderer's wording I could tell it's one band). As for the album, I do have it but have yet to listen to it all the way through. What i've heard is good, if not something i'd usually listen to. Then again, with the disappointment that has been rock music this year, i'm willing to give just about anything a try.

This album keeps growing on me. There's enough going on that it's hard to notice it all during the first few spins... but I'm now starting to get into the back half a little more, which kind of lost my attention a bit at first. In time, this one could be a 2005 oldover that cracks my Top 10 list for that year. As it stands now, it's #13 or #14 or something like that. A solid B, fixing to move up to B+.

I heard "Image of the Invisible" on XM last night and LOVED it. I want to hear more. That's my favorite song on the CD. The rest of 'em aren't necessarily that catchy, but the album is a very good balance between soft and loud, with plenty of different instruments, time signatures, etc., thrown into the mix. I was this close to buying it on impulse the other day, but chickened out at the last minute. I'll get it for cheaper soon, though.

i read the lyrics to all of the songs, and several of them sounded very much like Biblically inspired songs.

what does Vheissu mean? It's apparently a place name from Thomas Pynchon's novel V. At first I thought it sounded like some sort of a Buddhist term or something (which was nothing but wild speculation on my part - I'd make a really bad linguist), which is why it pleasantly surprised me to find so much Christian imagery on the album. Good review. I bought the cd last week, and it is growing on me with each listen. I'm actually using the song "Image of the Invisible" in my youth group tomorrow night.

Since AJ has apparently chosen not to be contactable via PM (might want to check with the tech support department on that, AJ), I'll have to respond to his PM here: hey...in your review of the Thrice cd, you said "lead singer Dustin Krenshue (sp?) is a Christian" or something like that...and i would definitely think that from the lyrics, but i was curious if you had actually read/heard that somewhere specific? thanks for any info...as a youth minister, i do a ton of research on any band i get into or mention in youth group, just so i know what i'm talking about, so if that's true, i'd love to be able to tell them that. thanks man. My source is Wikipedia, which, as always, requires a grain of salt. For me, if I put something up and it's not true, I'll usually get a comment correcting it. For you, that's a different matter (since they'll likely believe what you say regardless, and that would be bad if it later turned out not to be true), so your best approach is to check sources given for the Wikipedia article (if there are any).
