NP: "Jekyll & Hyde", Plumb I generally place albums in my Top 10 list for the year in which they release to the public-- thus, 2006 for the Plumb disc-- but you might also list it in your 2005 journal with a note that it's just a demo and/or leaked version of the disc. |

Well, I have removed PRO*PAIN by Mars ILL from my music journal since it obviously is not releasing in 2005. Hopefully it will in 2006! So, by default, Sufjan Stevens wins the crown!
Unbelieveably, a REMIX ALBUM is my #2. Backwaterprophets by Mars ILL is a completely re-worked version of Backbreakanomics. Apart from the lyrics, it sounds nothing like its predecessor...NOTHING like it. It does what a remix album should do...it improves on the original. I can't believe I'm saying it, but this is actually better than the original as a whole, which is saying a lot. Backbreakanomics was already nearly a masterpiece.

I'm currently debating whether to disqualify Plumb from my 2005 list. I think it hinges on whether the final release in February 2006 is better, worse, or the same as the pre-release. Either way, I won't put her on both lists (except maybe as a footnote on one). Disqualifying her would give me room to put David Crowder in my Top 10... an omission which some folks have griped about. NP: "O God, Where Are You Now? Maybe I'm hallucinating, but I could have sworn I saw that album marked pretty low in your journal earlier this year. Personally, I loved it-- she had me from the Latin chorus in Aspera. I'm such a nerd for Latin...

Now I can't get enough of it-- it's such a beautiful pop album, distinctive and artful without every sacrificing its accessibility and its focus on melody, voice, and lyric. The production is just fantastic-- it's one of those albums that deserves to be played on a really BIG stereo. So no, you're not hallucinating. The album was just a major grower for me. |

I literally HATED that album the first time I heard it, but it's grown on me exponentially with every listen. This is why I don't assign grades to stuff until I've listened at least three times. If I do, I might forget to go back and re-listen later. (Not that I don't still change grades after I have assigned them sometimes.) The exceptions are things like FFH that are so cheesy and painful to listen to that I know they'll never grow on me. That one took a quick plummet to #2 on my Worst Albums of 2005 list after one listen. (It's only #2 because Kutless was tough to beat.) |

Just out of curiosity, where do you get your information about the new Iona album, and of the possibility that Sufjan's next album will be Oregon? The Iona album was mentioned on their mailing list, which hasn't been very active otherwise. There's also news about it on their website: http://www.iona.uk.com/newindex/2004_pages/home.htmSufjan mentioned in an interview that he was working on Oregon... however, he was writing some of that stuff before he started Illinois, so it's pure speculation on my part as to whether that will be the next actual album. |

I finally took time to fully digest Switchfoot's Nothing Is Sound a couple weeks back. Sadly, this is the first Switchfoot album that I could not listen to all the way through. The only songs I enjoyed were "Easier Than Love", "Politicians", and "The Blues". C+ (and thats being generous). I felt no genuineness to the music for most of the album. It sounded overproduced and some of the lyrics were just absolutely cheesy (cheesier than SF can be at times)
