Do any of you care about album liner notes?  I hate it when there isn't any lyrics in them.  I love when they have cool art work and details about the songs.  My favorite lyrics booklet is actually to album I don't like very much, Linkin Park's Meteora. Not only does it have all the lyrics, it has a paragraph on the making of each song, which is pretty cool.  I think my favorite artwork on any CD I have is on Radiohead's OK Computer. The look of the book complements the album quite nicely, I think.  Share your favorite CD books with us.

I agree with you on the lack of lyrics being a pain, though I think it's okay in certain cases (Radiohead, REM). A few favorite booklets:

Over the Rhine, Good Dog Bad Dog.
Beautiful old black and white photos, as well as full lyrics and some notes on the recording of the album.

Radiohead, Kid A and Amnesiac.
The pictures on these albums reveal much about the music, and the way that each booklet contains phrases from the other CD ties these twin albums together effectively. The hidden book in Kid A is quite an experience.

Peter Gabriel, Passion.
Man, reading the list of all the instruments and musicians used on this album is mind-blowing!

Audio Adrenaline, Some Kind of Zombie.
Not one of my favorite CDs, but it's got some clever photos and icons.

U2, Achtung Baby.
The liner of this album is yet another slap in the face to all the critics who thought they had U2 pidgeon-holed.

hmm....I kinda liked the Lifehouse-Stanley Climbfall booklet...

Also one of my favorites (and no, not because I'm a fan boy), is the design for LA Symphony's "Baloney" EP.  The front cover shows a slice a bread, as does the back cover.  The CD looks just like a slice of balogna, then the inside of the back cover has a tomato and the inside cover of the front has mayo on the bread...

I don't mind if a CD's liner notes doesn't have lyrics.  I like looking at good visual art and photographs.

I like to look at album artwork and lyrics. Before I listen to a CD, sometimes I'll just read over the lyrics. And looking at the artwork and photographs and such is cool, especially if it continues a theme of motiff present in the music.

Another reason why lyrics are important: singers who don't pronounciate their words very well. It's a but annoying when I really can't understand what a singer is saying and I *have* to look at the liner notes to find out. It is quite humorous, however,  if I've been hearing one thing all along, and then find out I totally missed what the artist was singing.

Excuse my brief rant.  ph34r

I don't know if I have a favorite album booklet, though there are certain ones that stick out in my mind. The Beatle's "Sgt Pepper" album sticks out for me. It's one of their few albums that have the lyrics printed out--though, the Beatles sang very clearly, so printed lyrics weren't as necessary as they are for more contemporary artists. Believe it or not, dcTalk's "Jesus Freak" album booklet sticks out in my mind. The booklet is cool with the typewriter font, the old pictures and drawings and just the antiquated feel of the booklet. And I agree with Dv. LinkinPark's "Meteora" ablum booklet was pretty nice. I enjoyed the comments made about each of the songs and the artwork found throughout the ablum really made the whole album (music, booklet and all) feel like a package. It almost makes me feel as if I'm truly getting my money's worth when I buy a CD. Almost.  Wink

Yes, the Pepper booklet IS very cool.

Anyone noticed the little symbol that appears all over the Kid A CD and booklet? It apears to be a swimming pool filled with blood. It has been reported that this is a CIA shorthand symbol, with each pool of blood representing the blood of a certain number of people (50,000, I think?). Eerie, disturbing, and appropriate for that album.

Hey, I just read that in Everyday Apocalypse last night.  Of course, I had to return my copy of Kid A to the library, so I didn't get a chance for a closer look.

But why is it OK for Radiohead not to have lyrics printed?  Theirl lyrics aren't the easiest to understand just by listening.

I think Radiohead goes out of their way to make their lyrics hard to hear; "it's all part of the show," to borrow from The Rocketeer. It effectively shows us how hard it can be to communicate in this day and age, and it adds to the sense of confusion. Printing the lyrics would defeat the purpose.

Wow...excellent answer, Josh!  Radiohead printed lyrics for HTTT, but it's supposed to be a clearer record than Kid A, see.  It's supposed to be a whole lot more confrontational, and that can't be done with gibberish.

My favorite album art & packaging ever = Thrice's The Artist in the Ambulance. First of all, it's one of those cool paper CD cases. and all the lyrics are printed on invidual flashcard like things with neat photos & comments from each member of the band.

I usually hate those paper things, but that does sound cool.  I like textured paper inserts in album notes, they really add to the whole of the whole thing.

both of sigur ros' albums, agaetis byrjun and () respectively, have nice artwork. The Pumpkins' Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is interesting as well since it contains the artwork/credentials and the lyrics in two seperate booklets. OK Computer through Amnesiac were all intruiging as well as the Lateralus CD. Good stuff.
