Someone who feels my pain! I really didn't like some of his vocal work on this album. But at least you understand. And yeah, I'd like to hear that thrown-away album as well--they probably didn't keep it because it might have threatened their ascent to the World's Most Popular Rock Band throne.

it sounds really NICE. very NICE. so NICE in fact, that it isn't very interesting. Parachutes & AROBTTH are both vastly more interesting.
my first impression is that X&Y is an auditory Hallmark-ish big sloppy kiss to U2 kind of an album.
Coldplay is best at being a highbrow pop band. they just don't rock. That's been my thought about Coldplay since I first heard them. Rather syrupy and limp.

So, before my Internet connection went bad on Saturday, I had come up with a list of my favorite Coldplay songs that I was going to post, just to help counteract all the negativity (I agree with a lot of the negativity, but I don't dislike the band as a whole, so I might as well highlight what I think they've done right). Here goes:
1) Clocks 2) Shiver 3) Daylight 4) Spies 5) We Never Change 6) Yellow 7) Fix You 8) White Shadows 9) The Scientist 10) Square One

I must confess that, as much as I reem this band, they do have some songs that I've really enjoyed. At the top of my list: "Don't Panic," "The Scientist," "Clocks," and "Trouble."

ok, i must admit, after listening to X&Y multiple times to see if maybe i missed something i've discovered that i do like a few of the songs quite bit:
What If? Fix You Speed Of Sound (aka Clocks pt 2)
but 3 songs is not enough to get me to buy an album. i may just buy those 3 songs from ITunes and call it good.

"What If" is mostly boring to me. I like the buildup at the end, which sort of redeems the songs, but the only songs I'm truly fascinated with on the record are "Fix You" (a new twist on the tried-and-true Coldplay anthem) and "Square One" and "White Shadows" (which, along with "Talk" and "Twisted Logic", do appear to be interesting new territory for the band).

"What If" is mostly boring to me. I liked it until you pointed out the similarity to "Imagine". That's the one thing I hate about derivitive music - you don't even know it's crap until you can spot what they're ripping off.

my wife & i were discussing just last night how "What If" sounds like a less intense hybrid of John Lennon's "Imagine" and "Jealous Guy."
i still like the song though, even if it mirrors John Lennon a little too closely.

NP: "Love and Peace or Else", U2 Are you kidding? That's the most memorable thing I've read in a review since Josh mentioned Pitchfork's take on the new Beck.

Fix You has a very bad melody. And I think the lyrics suck. And it's very gimmicky. But wait. I think I'm beginning to repeat myself.
Btw, murlough, I got it, but then again, I know my Beatles.

Fix You has a very bad melody. What defines a bad melody? I think it's one of the better melodies on the CD. Sure, it's drippy and sentimental, but most of the other drippy and sentimental melodies on the album are quite dull.

I don't drippy and sentimental usually doesn't equal good.
I find the melody awkward. And the way it fits with the words is awkward as well. And let's face it. It's been done a thousands times over.
It's somewhat memorable, but not remarkable. It's tried, true, and cliched.
Maybe I should have said that it's mediocre. But depending on your scale, mediocre can be okay or bad. On mine it's bad.

I keep going back and forth on this album. One day I love it, the next I can't stand most of it. Even "Fix You" and "White Shadows", my original favorites, annoy me at times. I don't know if the album's not as good as I initially thought, or if I've just read so many opinions about it that I can't listen to it objectively anymore. Ugh.

I don't know if the album's not as good as I initially thought, or if I've just read so many opinions about it that I can't listen to it objectively anymore. Ugh. I have that problem with Codlplay sometimes - for a while, I couldn't really listen to Rush without being overly critical of it, and then I put it away for a while and came back to it right before X&Y came out, and found that I really enjoyed it. As much as I like to think I'm not influenced by other critical opinions, I'll be fair and say that those other opinions do sometimes cause me to look closer at things that I missed. With both Rush and X&Y, I had the initial impression of being impressed and feeling like I was listening to something that was going to be huge. It was pretty and it felt good. And then I realized not too much later that there was a lack of substance behind a lot of the prettiness. So for now, I'm ambivalent toward X&Y. I like the few songs I like and I can generally tolerate the others. I might develop more appreciation for some of it over time, but I don't think I'll ever see it as a totally fascinating album or anything.

The odd thing about this record for me is that although several of the songs bore me at times, I still find myself listening through most of the album almost every time I put it in. And the experience is never quite the same. So in that sense, I find this to be a fascinating album, though I'm not as excited about it as when I first heard it.
On a side note, the only songs from this record that would fit in my top ten list of Coldplay songs would be "Fix You", "White Shadows", and maybe "Say". Overall, the songwriting seemed less distinctive on this project...but there's no songs that scream SKIP ME either. I do wish Coldplay had incorporated a bit more piano this time around.

NP: "These Walls", Dream Theater Did I say that? Silly me...I meant "Talk". But I think that there are at least 4 songs on AROBTTH that I like better than that one anyway.
