Proposed song title for the California album:
Regarding a Surfer Girl Who Prefers to Not Be Identified as a Valley Girl Because, Like, Before There Was the Mall, There Was the Ocean, Okay? (Or, Alternatively, "What-EVER!")

Sufjan Stevens Welcomes You to New York, Tax Capital of The World!
A perfect song title would be "The Forgotten Corner, or, What's This Upstate Place I Keep Hearing About?"

A perfect song title would be "The Forgotten Corner, or, What's This Upstate Place I Keep Hearing About?" or "Western New York is Buffalo, not Staten Island!"

I love that Seattle Weekly review. There's some really impressive writing. Very thoughtful.
I think it just took me some time for the record to sink in- as some reviews I've read have stated, Illinois is almost too much of a good thing. I think that was my initial problem with the record.

Paste's review of the album is out. After a 5 star review for Coldplay, I though this one had better be, and it is.

Glimspes of God: Christianity Today on Illinois...they practically review it. Why didn't they count it as such? Illinois is more explicitly Christian than many of the other releases they've reviewd (Mae- The Everglow, etc....)

probably because it's not distributed to the Christian market... peace... love... bdg... Yeah, you're right. ...still, putting it in the Glimpses of God article kind of makes it out to be less Christian than it really is, if that makes sense, like it's not from a Christian artist but it has some themes that are parallel to Christianity...but whatever, it's nothing to complain about. At least they covered it at all. It'sa good article regardless.

I urged Mark Moring to use Sufjan as a regular review rather than a Glimpse, and I get the impression that he would have liked to, but CT Music walks a pretty fine line, and they have a lot to consider in terms of audience, so, for a variety of reasons, they decided to play it safe and make it a Glimpse. But it was most certainly not an easy choice for them to make.

Found a live version of Sufjan covering REM's "This One Goes Out to the One I Love" (along with several other indie bands covering Top 40 hits - some hilarious). Linkage

And yet...they still can't quite give up their traditional viewpoint: More references like that one might please those who want musicians to get honest about their lives and their faith. But "Casimir Pulaski Day" also recalls a physical encounter between the singer and his friend. It starts with the line, "In the living room, when you kissed my neck/And I almost touched your blouse." And progresses in a way that hints at a more illicit sexual experience: "In the morning at the top of the stairs/When your father found out what we did that night/And you told me you were scared." Lyrics such as these, and others that mention drinking wine, for instance, will in turn frustrate those who expect everything Stevens sings about to line up neatly with his expression of faith. Otherwise...a pretty good summary from an non-indie point of view

Actually, I didn't think it was such a bad article. In the part you quoted, the word "neatly" stuck out to me, and it struck me as a pretty true statement. At the very least, the faithful who are unwilling to be challenged in any way will have a problem with some of the allusions he makes at several points in the album.
The worst part was where they called Beck "indie", and went on to pigeonhole his music. Beck hasn't been indie for a long time, and more importantly, he's not a slave to any particular convention. Beck is just too diverse to make a sweeping statement like that, and besides, it comes from the assumption that being sad or guarded is bad.
I do think that Plugged-In is anything but, though. I mean, the album was pre-released in June.

HM Magazine reviewed Illinois for the Sept/Oct Issue (Blindside on the cover) and they gave it a 3 out of 5 which means "Solid" but not "fabulous" or "Classic"...
Same score as latest from Denison Witmer, MxPx, and TFK...
the review is maybe 100 words at best and concludes that "peeling back its multiple layers . . . is ultimately a rewarding endeavor"
peace... love... bdg...

What the hell does HM know about indie-folk-prof-orchestral-whatever-Sufjan-Stevens is type of music, anyway? What's next for them, Nickel Creek?

the biggest weakness of HM is the reviews . . . but the editor, Doug Van Pelt, is actually pretty well versed about different sorts of music. I really wish they would cut down on the volume of reviews and give a little more detail to them. then again, I'm used to my two/three page reviews.

Well-versed enough to recognize a classic when it bites him in the rear? Most of the time. He does like Haste the Day, though . . . ugh.

Sorry for necroposting, but I felt this was the best place to put this.
In my Music Appreciation class, we had to do a report on an artist/band of our choosing, so I chose Sufjan Stevens. Part of the report was to go to the front of the class and give a presentation about your artist/band for about 5 minutes, then play a song by said artist/band.
Besides the fact that I don't like giving presentations in front of class and I was nervous, I think it went pretty well. The class seemed to like his music (I played "Chicago"), and the teacher was astounded how complicated and good Sufjan's music is. After class I let him listen to "Come On! Feel The Illinoise!", which he was even more impressed with because of the complicated time signature. I'm relieved that it's over now (I was so freaking nervous...), but I'm also glad that I exposed more people to his music.
