Recently, I've been rereading some of Sylvia Plath's poetry, and I am reminded of the fact that I have still yet to read Plath's single novel, The Belljar. It's been sitting on my bookshelf for a year or so, completely untouched.

Has anyone here read it? If so, what did you think? Is it worth me taking the time to read it over spring break?

Is it as dark and as anguished as her poetry? If so, is there anything in it to redeem it, or does it simply wallow in despair and misery?

I read this sometime last year. I liked it quite a bit. Though it was depressing in parts, I enjoyed Plath's writing style. It was a quick read, also.

I've read little to none of Plath's poetry, though, so I can't really say which is more depressing.

I'm not really into Plath. I haven't read anything by her but a handful of poems, though.

If you don’t have freedom as a principle, you can never see a reason not to make an exception. There are constantly going to be times when for one reason or another there’s some practical convenience in making an exception.

i read the Belljar as a teenager. a more depressing book you are unlikely to find. that said, it was very interesting. i would recommend it, but only to those not on the brink of despair themselves. if you're already depressed, this book will only make things worse...big time.
