So if you guys don't dig this solo debut of John Davis, I'll be very shocked. This is good old fashioned rock 'n roll.
So, with that said. I demand everyone listen to John Davis. Now. I mean it.

I'm interested in hearing it as well. I listened to some brief song snippets and was not impressed, but that's hardly enough to judge the album on.
I'll add it to my must-hear list.

I'll add it to my must-hear list. This is right up your alley, Mr. Hurst. I know you will end up liking this album.

Josh will like this album. Need I mention that I hear Brian Wilson, Ron Sexsmith, and even slight hints of Joe Henry to get him more interested?
How's this for impressive - from the liner notes:
John Davis: drums, cymbals, electric bass, synthesizer, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, slide guitar, pedal steel guitar, baritone guitar, grand piano, electric piano, toy piano, mellotron, organ, accordion, triangle, voices.
WOW.

Oh, man... I'm just DYING to share my thoughts on this album, but I mustn't interfere with the Second-Guess the Critics game! Yeah, that's the hard thing about that game. Starting tomorrow, I'm going to have to keep my mouth shut about OtR for about a week, and that's going to be extremely difficult. Well, if I do give any of my thoughts away permaturely, at least I'll be giving them away to everyone.

I've been listening to John Davis' album off and on for almost a week now. It's a melodic, hooky album with plenty of memorable songs and soul-searching lyrics. I can see why so many people here like it.
But, personally, I just don't hear must creativity or artistry here. Davis obviously has good taste in music, and he seems determined to make us abundantly aware of which musicians he is inspired by. But being inspired by Brian Wilson is one thing; ripping him off is quite another. And I'm afraid that Davis is guilty of the latter on more than one of these songs. The most obvious example: "I Hear Your Voice," an astoundingly obvious knockoff of "God Only Knows" that steals the familiar melody and sucks all the life out of it.
And the lyrics... mmm... well, I can certainly appreciate Davis' soul-searching and his celebration of what the Lord has done in his heart, but there's not a scrap of real poetry to be found here. He instead expresses his newfound spirituality in cliches and forced ryhme scemes, like these:
"I don't know whether to laugh or to cry/ And I feel like I wanna lay down and die."
"I lost my reason to keep living when I gave up on salvation/ Now I wanna hear that station/ Let it roll/ Let it fill my soul/ Let it make me whole again."
"Your senses deceive you/ But Christ can retrieve you!"
...and so on.
Anyway, I'm giving it a 3 star/C-rating. And I'm curious... for those of you who correctly guessed my score over in the SGtC thread... how did you come up with the right answer?

i've only heard clips so far. but from what i hear of "I Hear Your Voice" to me just sounds like a very clever remodulation of notes similar to "God Only Knows." and there is no bigger "Pet Sounds" devotee than myself. Brian Wilson is THE man.
IMHO it is no worse than Sam Phillips' "Strawberry Road" that you can easily sing The Beatles' "Penny Lane" along with. and "Strawberry Road" is a great tune too.

The difference between the two artists, to me, is that Sam Phillips takes her love for the Beatles and does some very clever, very original things with it. Davis, on the other hand, merely comes across as a copycat. That's somewhat subjective, I know, but it's the impression I have right now.

where would we music critics be without our opinions?
i can see where you're coming from. it is indeed a fine line between emulation and being a copycat.

I never listened to the album myself, but I did read the christianitytoday.com and allmusic.com reviews, and based off what I read there, I had a pretty good idea you'd give it three stars. As I suspected, to you the album came off more as copying his favorite influences, rather than subtly incorporating them to create something more original and unique...

I listened to sound clips, and that's how I came up with an accurate guess of 3 stars for Josh. Stylistically it seemed like it would be semi-up his alley, but the lyrics struck me as being way too simplistic and CCM-like (even though this isn't a CCM album), which is generally a major mood-killer for Josh.

That's what I used, and for Josh I just try to think more lyrically for a moment. I think my Josh prediction will work out well in the long-run so long as I do that. I didn't listen to anything from Lifehouse at all, which could explain why I was so far off.

allmusic sound clips, too? Nope. CDUniverse. They don't require me to have an account. That's what I used, and for Josh I just try to think more lyrically for a moment. I think my Josh prediction will work out well in the long-run so long as I do that. Yes, exactly. There were other factors, too, based on the types of music that I know appeal more to Josh, but that was the main deciding factor. I didn't listen to anything from Lifehouse at all, which could explain why I was so far off. I was wondering where that "5" came from. I mean, I enjoyed their last two albums and gave both a "4", but I never thought Lifehouse was that good.

Well, actually I was thinking you would go with an A-range, but not a straight 5 star classic-status album rating. Since A-range generally at least rounds to a 5, that's what I put down because I did know that you generally like Lifehouse, but I didn't do any research into the specific album.

I'd give this album a B, B- at worst. It is nothing great but it is good enough to not be 3 star rating.

Hey, he can't take all the credit for that. Well, no, I suppose not, but, since he sent me their CD, I can safely say that, were it not for DGP, Eisley would not be in my 2K5 Top 10 list right now.

I figured I'd ask you guys this since you seem to dig him more than the folks at CMC.
I'm interviewing him this year at GMA Week (one of 4 that I have scheduled - I just couldn't get into interviewing this year). Is there anything in particular you guys want to know? I don't know much about his former group, Superdrag, but I know some of you know a little bit more. Got any suggestions?
