I'm thinking of going to see Rachael Yamagata at the Hotel Cafe on Aug. 28th.
...and if I can get time off work I might go see Crumbacher play their reunion show in Irvine on Aug. 19th. The Choir and The Altar Boys will also be playing.

I just found out that Gillian Welch will be playing in Hollywood on October 6th...a Thursday...must try to get off work...
ahhh...but she will also be playing at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco...as will Emmylou Harris and Patty Griffin and Buddy Miller and a bunch of other people (that I really don't care about). wish I had someone to go up there with me...or should I go by myself?

Seeing as I love San Francisco, and would love to see the artists you mentioned, I would gladly come with you if it were at all possible. I wish the Denver area would get more in the way of cool music festivals.

I think there's a bluegrass festival in Telluride...I looked on the map to see where it is...not exactly close to Denver. :-\ I don't know for sure if I can go to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass but hey, if you can go, let me know and we can get together there. I think that would be fun.
Friday night's concert with Crumbacher, The Altar Boys, The Choir, 441, and Undercover was cool. I am now officially a fan of The Choir. I think their music sounds better in a live setting though, because the audio samples I had heard hadn't grabbed me like tonight's performance did.

no love for Crumbacher, eh? that's okay, I understand. I had the feeling that they were kinda making fun of their own old sound last night. that made it even more fun. oddly enough there is a thread about this concert in the OtR forum. I posted this over there: so, here are some of my concert notes... the order they played last night: 441 Crumbacher The Altar Boys The Choir Undercover I wasn't familiar with 441's music so I didn't attempt to write down the songs they did. one was about Mourning to Dancing. I enjoyed seeing Crumbacher and the chemistry the band members have with each other. Dawn Wisner-Johnson is so cute! anyway, here's the list of songs they did: Thunder Beach Tame the Volcano Glowin' in the Dark It Don't Matter Once In a Heartbreak (the guitarist from '84 - '87 joined them for a few songs) Infrared Eyes Understudy The Turning (with Dawn on lead vocals) then they did a medley of the radio songs for the fans who liked those. Rainy Season/Here Am I/Speechless/Tough Act to Follow/Interstellar Satellite Jamie Life of the Party I don't know the titles for the Altar Boys' songs. I wrote down notes, but I snagged some info from Mike Stand's website: Unconditional Love Against the Grain You Found Me GLM I'm Not Talking About Religion I Question It You are Loved Hearts Lost In Nowhere Life Begins at the Cross (encore) When You're A Rebel Forever Mercy (with Stephen and Dawn from Crumbacher) The Choir Circle Slide Mercy Will Prevail Consider Children of Time Yellow Skies A Sentimental Song Sad Face About Love (someone in the audience shouted "Wide Eye Wonder" and Derri said "we're not doing that one". and something like when you can form your own band you can make your own setlist.) To Rescue Me I didn't try to write down Undercover's set list but someone else posted what he remembered: Is Anyone Thirsty I'm Just a Man God Rules Tears in Your Eyes (intro'd with the pig snort by legendary UC roadie, Buzz) Holy Holy Holy (with original UC frontman, Bill Walden) Love Me Dangerously Darkest Hour The Eyes of Love World Come Crashing Down Mea Culpa/Remember Me anyway, I emailed one of the people who got the concert together to ask if it was recorded. I really really really want to be able to listen to The Choir's performance again. it was freakin' awesome. I loved The Altar Boys, too. and I would love to be able to share the musical goodness with others who weren't able to be there.

Phil, I feel exactly the same way you do about Bebo. Rather dry on CD, but rather fascinating in concert. Maybe I'll dig up my old review of Bebo in concert with Jeremy Camp, just for comparison.

Speaking of NC, do you know where I could find a schedule for the "House Party" fest? Based on Mat Kearney's website, this is it. It doesn't list times, but I think it starts at 1:00 pm. Joy Williams Mat Kearney (2 songs) Building 429 Mat Kearney (2 songs) Chris Rice Burlap to Cashmere (2 songs) Nicole C. Mullen Burlap to Cashmere (2 songs) Jars of Clay House Presentation (whatever that is) Michael W. Smith

JOC and PFR did several of their songs together, it was sweet.

Except this time around to be very different. In terms of live shows, they don't even seem like the same band any more. They've improved vastly, but don't go in expecting a rock show. I'm so royally pissed that like most of the folk-based CCM tours, they're completely ignoring the West Coast. you know dude, i do feel sorry for you not being able to see this show. but the fact of the matter is that your location in the U.S. yields far more good concerts per year than mine. heck, we're lucky to get the hugely popular acts to come...and they are seldom high on my list of things to spend money on. good quality artists almost never come to Arkansas, especially not indie artists with high critical acclaim. i'm STILL sad about Over the Rhine cancelling their sole Arkansas show back on the Ohio tour. but they had a good reason, so i'm not holding a grudge. but i sure wish they'd try to come around this tour!!! needless to say i'm hoping Sufjan's next album is Arkansas...i mean, he'd be a jerk not to come do a show here then!

JOC and PFR did several of their songs together, it was sweet. i saw that one too, with PFR, in Conway...and later saw them in Conway with Burlap to Cashmere as the openers, among the 7 or 8 times I've seen them. But they've released two albums since I last saw them, so I'm excited about seeing them again. And yeah, I'm sure they're gonna get hurt by the fact that the JC tour is only a couple of days later in LR, which is sad. I'm not even gonna make the Jars show a youth trip, because sadly, only a handful of my youth really even know who they are that much anymore, they're so far out of the mainstream CCM world. I've tried to promote them, even given away some Jars cd's, used some Jars videos, but I'm not sure many of them really would care about that show, so it may be me and my wife and maybe another couple. I did give a copy of Redemption Songs to one of my former youth, now in college and now one of my best friends in the world, a couple of weeks ago and she LOVES it.

I finally updated my list with some fall concerts I'm hoping to attend. Sadly, I have to miss David Crowder Band because I'm going to a wedding that night. But I hope to make it to see Mae & Mute Math (10/30), Switchfoot (11/11), and Nickel Creek (12/17).

Here's a couple I am doing my darndest to attend:
10/17/05 Matt Nathanson w/ Matt Wertz and Kate Earl @ Water Street Music Hall in Rochester, NY. 10 bucks per person! woot..so 20 if my girlfriend wants to go.
10/28 or 10/29. Phil Keaggy with band in either Rochester or Buffalo, depending if I can get someone to switch work days with me. 25 bucks? worth it for PK. or 15-20 in Buffalo......hmm...great deal either way..
11/12/05 O.A.R. w/ Michael Tolcher. Niagara University..20 bucks...i definitely have to get time off for this show.

tonight might have been the single greatest arts experience I've ever had. First, Doreen's Jazz New Orleans. This group is recently displaced from New Orleans, and my college took them in for a couple of nights and we held a benefit concert for them tonight. Before the concert I ate dinner with them and they were amazing people, absolutely humble and thankful for what they have. Doreen's little girl is the absolute cutest thing I've ever seen in my life. But all of this has little to do with the actual performance. Well... I've seen some good jazz bands in my life-- the Des Moines Big Band is excellent-- but these guys were amazing. Doreen plays clarinet, and if you've never heard a clarinet in a jazz band, you must hear her play. Her husband play tuba for the bass sound of the band and he's a remarkable tuba player. I really can't so more from that... he was awesome. And then there was Dwayne, who put on one of the most amazing drumming exhibitions I've ever seen, wow. A couple of players from Sioux City showed up to fill out the band because some of the band members couldn't make it up to Iowa. Man... Absolutely amazing, the best concert experience I've ever had in my life. It was undeniably transcendent. wow. And then I went to Corpse Bride... Its like I'm on the biggest drug high in the history of ever and I won't come down.

WOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOO!
What could be better than seeing your favorite band for the very first time? Seeing your favorite band for the first time AND seeing your second favorite band for the first time, all within the span of a month!
Over the Rhine is coming to Knoxville on October 23 and I plan on being there in the front row.

So I took my youth group Saturday to a concert that I personally had very little interest in, and most of you wouldn't either. It was called Vertical Fest, and this year they brought the Audio Adrenaline Tour as part of it. There were five bands, and my youth loved them, because there was kinda something for everyone. But I myself am not interested much at all in any of the five. They were Kids in the Way (to me, both times I've seen them in concert, they have come off like they are just trying to be obnoxiously loud and have had awful sound mixes that are just not enjoyable at all), Sanctus Real (I may have liked them the best, but they had almost the opposite problem at times, it wasn't loud enough or 'aggressive' enough or something), Superchick (I missed most of their set waiting on food, but one of my youth loved them; they annoy me personally though, so I didn't mind too much), Pillar (they had some technical problems, but otherwise, their live presence was actually really good, which surprised me because the only other time I saw them I didn't like their sound at all), and Audio Adrenaline (they frustrate me...their last few albums have been such watered down, middle of the road, stereotypical CCM stuff, but their live show, just as it was like 8 years ago the last time i saw them, was really really good. They are a real rock type band live, about 4 or 5 times as heavy and rocking as on the albums, and that's a frustrating thing to me because it makes me wonder where that is in the studio).
It was by far not even close to one of my favorite concerts, but it was good for what it was, I guess, and if you liked any or many of the bands, it was a pretty good night.
I'm much more excited that I get to see Crowder and Shane and Shane next Monday and Skillet next Saturday.

That AA tour has a pretty good lineup. I want to see Sanctus Real sometime, because I've enjoyed both of their albums. Pillar has been good both times I've seen them, and Audio Adrenaline has been great every time I've seen them. KITW and Superchick would be the drawbacks, I guess. But, alas, as a new parent it ain't happening for me.

Pillar is actually a pretty solid live band, despite being mediocre on record. The reason is because they're a straight-up rock combo, so there's not anything missing in terms of bells and whistles from the album when you play live, and it's harder to pay attention to lyrics in concert, so all you care about is the fact that they rock. But their sound has been pretty good both times I've seen them. drove an hour and a half to catch a free show with them and Falling Up last year, and didn't regret going out of my way.
Superchic[k], on the other hand, is decent on CD but absolutely awful live.

I have probably been to about 80 concerts, maybe more than that, I've lost count, and last night I went to one that would be in the top 3...Shane and Shane and Crowder. What an incredible night of musicianship and worship. I would love to put it into words, but I have no idea how. I just found myself saying over and over, "This is what I wish there was a lot more of in Christian music circles."

Just found out that I have to miss Switchfoot because both their Ventura show (with Eisley opening, dangit!) and their L.A. show are sold out. Oh well, I have the feeling they'll be back. As for Eisley... well, I'm used to disappointment.

Are these two shows far from you?
If not, you could try and buy them at the venue. There's always people trying to sell off leftover tickets and such.

I'm thinking about going to a Neon Cross concert this Saturday. haven't decided yet. I am not really familiar with their songs but I had enjoyed watching/hearing them in August. I saw that Kevin Max will be doing a show at the Viper Room next month. it's on a Thursday night though, and I dunno that I am interested in it enough to take time off work. last week's Gillian Welch show was *fantastic*. (kind of amusing to be stomping and singing along with "I'll Fly Away" in a trendy Hollywood club.) they did most of their usual songs, plus a few new ones and covers that they started doing recently. (I have a ton of concert recordings and unreleased stuff of theirs, so new stuff is an extra big deal for me!) Going Down the Road Feelin' Bad One More Dollar My First Lover Elvis Presley Blues Annabelle Make Me A Pallet On Your Floor Got to Find a Spritual Way Look at Miss Ohio Daniel Had The Keys to the Kingdom I Want to Sing That Rock and Roll Dear Someone (break) No One Knows My Name One Little Song Revelator I Love You More Than Ever But You're Gone By the Mark cover of Neil Young's Tired Eyes (David on lead vocals) Orphan Girl Caleb Meyer (encore) The Way It Will Be I'll Fly Away cover of Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit I was at the very front and (almost) center, close enough to see the little thumbnail scratches on David Rawlings' guitar. 8-)
