Hmm - I might have gotten it for $7.99, too - I don't remember (I did buy at Best Buy on Jan. 1).  I guess I'll retract my statement about early adopters.

Still, a spiffy (and fair) price.  I am done paying $15+ for an album by anyone unless it offers something a little extra (a well-engineered SACD for example).

In a move reminiscent of a Nine Inch Nails Garage Band thing I remember, Radiohead has released "Nude" in pieces for the listener to remix in Garage Band or whatever they use to do such things.  Pretty cool if you are so inclined, but $6 in iTunes seems a lot to pay for what is essentially 1 song.

I guess one can argue that you are paying for the interactive experience of playing with the track, though.  I might just do the voting thing for this one.

When did NIN do that? I remember a fairly obscure Christian industrial band called Massivivid putting up an entire album's worth of songs in snippets such that all of the individual sounds in a track were extracted and stood alone, and could be used in remixes, and those were on mp3.com and downloadable for free. I'm willing to bet that NIN did it first and Massivivid was likely inspired by a band that had musical influence on them. Anyway, this was circa 2000/2001, so it's not like the concept is new, and I too am a bit annoyed at the concept of someone having to pay for it.

I do like that the Web 2.0 age has brought a lot more interactivity between musicians and their fans, though, with some bands even going so far as to have their fans create music videos for them.

It was "The Hand that Feeds" (With Teeth-era, some around 2005 I guess), and it was specifically released in Garage Band's format for free.

Here's an article.

Fatboy Slim?

Definitely higher-tech than what Massivivid did, then - they just put up mp3 files that you had to chop up for yourself, but at least that way you didn't have the vocal part overlapping the guitar riff or whatever.

Fatboy Slim?

How early did he put out a fan-made video? I was thinking of Barenaked Ladies' video for "Wind It Up" and Incubus' video for "Dig" (both 2006) - it's highly likely that other artists calling for fan-made videos that ended up being the "official" video pre-dated this. (I seem to recall Weezer or someone like that doing one sooner, but I might be getting my wires crossed.)

1999, "Praise You", but Spike Jonze directed it under a pseudonym according to wiki, so it kind of doesn't count in that case.  I didn't know that.

Isn't "Spike Jonze" already a pseudonym?

And thanks for reminding me how much I hated everything I ever heard from Fatboy Slim, the man who couldn't write more than a four-line song to save his life. (Though the Cristopher Walken thing was cool.)

Well, a lesser-known pseudonym.   :ρ
