In a move reminiscent of a Nine Inch Nails Garage Band thing I remember, Radiohead has released "Nude" in pieces for the listener to remix in Garage Band or whatever they use to do such things. Pretty cool if you are so inclined, but $6 in iTunes seems a lot to pay for what is essentially 1 song.
When did NIN do that? I remember a fairly obscure Christian industrial band called Massivivid putting up an entire album's worth of songs in snippets such that all of the individual sounds in a track were extracted and stood alone, and could be used in remixes, and those were on mp3.com and downloadable for free. I'm willing to bet that NIN did it first and Massivivid was likely inspired by a band that had musical influence on them. Anyway, this was circa 2000/2001, so it's not like the concept is new, and I too am a bit annoyed at the concept of someone having to pay for it.
I do like that the Web 2.0 age has brought a lot more interactivity between musicians and their fans, though, with some bands even going so far as to have their fans create music videos for them.
