Here's what the critics will be reviewing for this round:
Murlough: Lifehouse, Lifehouse bloop: Room Noises, Eisley Josh: John Davis, John Davis Danny: Redemption Songs, Jars of Clay bdg: Hymns, Out of Eden
The floor is now closed for new critics to join in. You may commence voting.
Some advice - In some cases, people will be reviewing albums by artists we've never heard of (for example, I've never heard of John Davis), so feel free to go find sound clips on Amazon, CD Universe, etc., or read reviews at your favorite review sites if you think this will help. I don't expect people to put a ton of effort into research here, but it's up to you how informed you want to be when you make your guesses. Probably better to have more than just an artist name and album title to go on, I guess.

Just so everyone knows, voting has now commenced. You have until midnight Pacific Time on Wednesday, March 30 to enter your guesses. If you change any guesses midway through, edit your existing post instead of adding a new post.

***** = A **** = B *** = C ** = D * = F
(no zero stars, I think...)

Yikes... I didn't read everyone else's scores until after I posted my own, and it looks like I'm shooting pretty low for murlough, and perhaps a bit high for bloop. This should be interesting...

Spring break just started, so I won't be able to post on Eisley until the 30th. That should be alright, I think, but just FYI.

Murlough: Lifehouse, Lifehouse
4 stars
bloop: Room Noises, Eisley
3 stars
Josh: John Davis, John Davis
3 stars
Danny: Redemption Songs, Jars of Clay
I bet Dan will hate it, he's never really been into hymns. 1 star.
bdg: Hymns, Out of Eden
2 stars
Is it too early for us to start picking albums for the second round?

I bet Dan will hate it, he's never really been into hymns. 1 star. Ha ha, nice try. You're not getting any credit for that even if you turn out to be right. (Weird. I almost edited your post instead of quoting it. Gotta get used to these newfangled mod privileges.) Is it too early for us to start picking albums for the second round? Post it in this thread on the last day of this round. I haven't come up with a good way of keeping track of those yet, so I'm open to suggestions.

I think Mur will rate the new Lifehouse as 4 stars.
I'll stay with the rest of my guesses for now. You'll need to edit your existing post to keep me from getting confused. So do we just announce our ratings in this thread on Wednesday? Thursday morning, actually, or I guess Wednesday if you're up past midnight my time.

Well, since I'm going to be on the road more today, I guess now is as good a time as any to post my rating. Going by straight letter grades to star grades, no pluses or minuses, I'd give Room Noises a B, or 4 stars. (Some think I'm a little mean or something).
For the next round, guess what my rating will be for Anberlin's Never Take Friendship Personal.

OK, since bloop has posted his rating early, I'll count everyone's ratings for bloop now so that no one can be sneaky and change them. Feel free to still change your estimated ratings for other people until the rest of us post, if you want.

I'm going to have to settle on three stars for Redemption Songs. It's not a bad album, really, but too many of the songs just don't do anything for me. I really love a few of them, particularly "God Be Merciful to Me", "God Will Lift Up Your Head", "Nothin' But The Blood", and "They Will Know We Our Christians By Our Love". That last one in particular sticks out to me as an album highlight. A few of the songs in the middle range from boring to irritating with me. I'm having hard time getting into "Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder", "On Jordan's Stormy Banks I Stand", and particularly "It Is Well". The songs that I love aren't enough to push this album into 4 or 5 star territory, and the duller numbers aren't bad enough to make me really dislike the album either. Three stars.

Well, with my apologies to DGP and Wanderer, I'm going to have to give John Davis's album 3 stars, the equivalent of a C rating. I'll explain why in the John Davis thread.

Out of Eden certainly tried to switch things up a bit, but ended up leaving me largely unimpressed... There was definitely some good and bad moments throughout the disc but after all was said and done, i landed on 78 for CMC which on a 5 point scale equates to a 3...

DAMN!
I read a bunch of reviews of that album and thought it sounded like it would be a major diasppointment for you, but I didn't think it would be THAT disappointing... I tell you man, it's a major bummer. The first two albums weren't groundbreaking, but I really enjoyed them. AMG had it right on this one - "Lifehouse has become a rock band that doesn't rock". Or something like that. I mean, if you're a mellow artist making mellow music, that's fine, but if you're a rock band, slow-to-mid-tempo rock songs for an entire album tend to get extremely boring because plain ol' rock instrumentation just can't sustain that kind of an atmopshere in all but the most talented hands. There is absolutely no energy on this album. NONE.
