After Danny posted about quotes not working in the RO thread (and I brushed him off, heh), I thought it might be useful to create a thread for when things don't work the way they ought. If a question gets asked in here and it's useful, I may actually post it to the PhAQ as well. I doubt this will see too much use, but don't be embarrassed if you have something you want to ask. The worst thing that can happen is that you'll be made fun of, and that's a given on this board anyway Wink

I promise to take all problems, questions, and requests seriously, regardless of whether I make fun of you.

Speaking of dumb questions, I once saw I guy start a thread at forum that simply read "How do I start a new thread?"  I hope he was just being funny...

When I was trying to quote in the "Second Guess the Critic" thread, all the HTML that should have been after the quote box appeared in the quote box, and there wasn't any way to submit the reply when I was done.

This was in Firefox 0.10.1 (I ought to upgrade this thing). I've noticed that Mozilla-based browsers tend to be stricter on not allowing tags to be incorrect than IE, so that might have something to do with it.

About a minute after I noticed this my computer overheated and crashed. I think that's not related to this, but you never know. When the computer came back, it still wouldn't work properly, and I wound up just doing a regular reply instead.

Much as I hate to admit it, you appear to be right. I went to that thread and hit quote on the post you were apparently trying to quote and, sho 'nuff, it happened just as you said. This is apparently a bug in the Invision Power Board software, and there is nothing I can do about it. But thanks for pointing it out and my apologies for discounting what you said earlier.

Question: when I do a search, and get a list of results, is there a way to jump directly to the post(s) in the thread containing the search terms? For example, say I do a search for "Calvin," and one of my results is in the Random Observation Thread.  Without reading the whole thread, how do I find the exact posts I'm looking for?

EDIT: Hah.  I actually did look around for an appropiate button before posting this question, but right after I posted this, I looked on the search page again to see if I had missed something.  Low and behold, there was a button labled "Show results as posts" which does exactly what I want.  Duh. :embarass:

speaking of which, is there any way to set the default as "show my results as posts"? I don't know about other people, but I never care to see the results as threads.

If there is, I don't know of one. I looked through the Admin options to see if I could set it as default but I couldn't. I agree that it's pretty silly to have that as the default. However (assuming you remember), it only takes one click to change.

A lot of people accidentally post as guest and then whine about how the Phorum handles cookies. After investigating the matter, I think I have the lowdown. I have also updated the PhAQ to contain this information:

If you use the Quick Login feature (at the bottom of the screen when you're logged out), the board will ONLY set a SESSION COOKIE. This means that you can continue to browse as you, but once you end your session (usually by closing the browser) you will no longer be logged in (i.e. the cookie will be deleted). If you want it to remember you, you have to click the link that says Login and then click the box that says "remember me". This is not a bug; I don't think you would want the Phorum indiscriminately remembering you if you just used quick login to post on some public computer!

I don't really know why this even confuses people, since the interface for posting when not logged in looks different than the interface for posting when you are an active user, but enough people have done so and then complained about it that I guess it qualifies as a valid problem. The solution is obviously to log in permanently. If you have already posted accidentally as guest, just do what you normally do: make a second post in the same thread after logging in saying "I was the guest who made the above post." A mod will then generally clean up the mess (copy the text from your guest post, edit the second post and paste in the copied text, then delete the guest post) the next time one wanders by. We provide this service for free and generally don't even make fun of you Wink

Hopefully this will clear the matter up. Please do not complain to me about it when you post as guest; the board is behaving exactly as it is supposed to. If you think this is a misfeature, complain to Invision and not to me. IPB is a commercial piece of software and I can't just go in and change the way it works even if I wanted to (and I don't).

Maybe I'm just stupid (actually, it's pretty likely that I am), but is there someway to see the actual post that contains the keyword when you search for a keyword?  Because it's not very helpful to know that someone posted once about search term X when the result is just the title of a 91 page thread.

I'm not sure. It may be a caching issue. As far as I can tell from the admin logs neither Josh nor I changed your avatar without your knowledge. I do seem to recall another case on an Invision board (it was a while ago; don't remember if it was this one or not) where changing user settings caused an old avatar to return from the grave unexpectedly.

Josh's avatar museum comment made me wonder--would it be possible to have a phorum photo gallery?

If you mean photo gallery in the sense of pbase or photobucket, then I don't think so--the Invision software is designed for online messageboards, and though it is very extensible I don't think it can be used in that respect.

If you mean a thread where photos can be shared, then sure. However, Chuck (the guy who hosts this board) probably has better things to do with his storage and bandwidth than hosting our photos, so you would have to hotlink them from some other place which allows that sort of thing. I would be glad to let phorum users store photos (jpeg/gif/png, not giant bitmaps :P) on my computer via FTP (like the Pub) since I run both an FTP and HTTP server, but it would of course be subject to the same limitations as the Pub, i.e. down about half the time.

gotcha.

I'm not too familiar with the ins and outs of the various kinds of forums, just that there are different kinds with different features (and costs!), but I saw that an ASP-based one had a community-accessible photo gallery, so I just wondered if this one has that, too.

I think I've figured out part of the problem. the phorum doesn't like the word prescriptio n, at least not from me.
at first I thought it was the word script, but I can post that just fine. I tested a bunch of different combos, with spaces here and there and leaving out or changing a letter, but I only encounter that error message when there's the complete word without any spaces.

all of the following are okay.
brescription
prescriptiom
plescription
preskription
prescriptin
presscription
rescriptionp
prescripton
pescription
perscription
postscription
p rescription
pr escription
pre scription
pres cription
presc ription
prescr iption
prescrip tion
prescript ion
prescripti on
prescriptio n

*shrug* I know I'm not cut out to be a doctor and shouldn't be writing prescriptio ns, but this is just weird.
I noticed that Vlad! could post the word in the original cow bell thread. I tried to do something similar and got the error message. I also tried to run a search on the offending word and got the error message.
(yes, I have become obsessed with the word. I'm sorry. perhaps I have had too much cowbell.)

on the avatar setting page, it says "The following file types are allowed: .gif .jpeg .jpg .swf .png", but when I try to upload a png, I get the page that says "You are not allowed to upload that type of file as an avatar."
is there an additional restriction in place? the png is 33k.  I saved it as a jpg but it seems less blurry as a png.

Avatars are allowed up to 80k; I don't see why it's not letting you upload. I tried tweaking the settings a bit so you can try it again, but I don't have high hopes.

As a suggestion for JPG quality, you might use a converter that allows you to specify the conversion quality. I find that 15% will produce a file that is a small fraction of the original bitmap size but has very little JPEG artifacting or blurriness. I don't think Imaging does it and I got disgusted with the horrible interface of The GIMP before I could determine for sure, but I know Paint Shop Pro allows you to tweak the quality, and I suspect IRFanView does, though I don't use it myself.

Yeah, Chuck fixed that issue a while back Wink

And obviously the phorum just discriminates against .png files or something. If I were at home (ass opposed to at work) I might experiment further, but I suppose it will remain a mystery unless I remember to do something about it this evening (assuming I both remember AND feel like doing it Wink).

alternatively, you could export your messages if you want to save them to your hard drive and then delete them from the phorum.

I agree, that is a crappy 'solution' to the problem. Schil's suggestion is probably the best. I just delete old messages that no longer matter, which keeps my PM box fairly empty.

I don't think I can edit that text. It's a problem with IPB.

Which font, in particular? Also, is the font abnormally large, or is it just too large for your tastes but still in the realm of normalcy?

This font. That I'm typing right now.

It's not abnormally large. But it every time I come to the page it makes me think that my font settings have been changed.
