Hey Vlad!, check me out! I registered for next semester's classes today, and one of the courses I'll be taking is English 208, aka Modern Fantasy and Sci-Fi.

I talked to the professor-- who also happens to be my advisor-- and he told me that the reading list for this class would include works by:

Tolkien
Ursula Le Guin
Phillip K. Dick
Isaac Asimov
And that author who wrote Snow Crash... I forget his name right now

...among others.

They may as well rename the class Sci-Fi and Fantasy that Vlad! Likes 208.  =)

Neal Stephenson is the author whose name you couldn't remember. But I am insanely jealous--I spend enough time reading books by those people that it would be nice if I could get course credit for it  rolleyes

I hope you enjoy it and that you share your opinions on the works of these authors.

I'm taking a class a bit like that this year (only on the high school level).  Next year I'm taking a C.S. Lewis class in first semester, then a Tolkein class in second.  I'm really excited about it, based on the books we'll be analyzing.  =)

This particular class that I'm taking often includes CS Lewis in the curriculum, but, since they have a limited ammount of time, they can only read so many books, and, for whatever reason, Lewis didn't quite make the reading list this time around.

Sorry, guys, but you're mistaken; the best English class EVER would have to be AP English at CAK.

What were you thinking, Josh?

AP English at CAK was a great class (and the teacher was pretty good too, from what I hear), but the subject matter wasn't that great. I mean, I would much rather read LeGuin's The Left Hand of Darkness or Asimov's The Complete Robot than Joyce's tragically uninteresting Portrait Of the Artist As a Young Man.

I would certainly contend that all of the books we read in AP English were worth reading, but not all were necessarily ENJOYABLE. But yeah, as far as high school English classes go, I can't imagine anything topping it.

But, frankly, I think a college-level literature class is inherently superior to a high-school one...

One would hope that is the case.
