This just in: some cohorts of mine who are attending C'Stone in Illinois have reported that Over the Rhine will be releasing a double album entitled Ohio this fall! WOOOOO HOOOOOOO!

New T-shirts are already on sale at their shows, for those of you who care about such things...

Since everyone here seems to like OtR so much, I guess I should check them out, even though I don't really like female vocalists most of the time.  blink  What album should I get to try them out?  Any place online with whole OtR songs that you can listen to?  Streaming audio or video?  Thanks.

I don't have any OtR albums, but they intrigue me greatly, mainly because of the excellent things I've heard from everyone here. I've been spending a lot of time lately at their website, which is one of the best I've ever come across. Their lyrics are true poetry. Very impressive and moving stuff.

Overhterhine.com has some MP3s you can dowload, but I think most of them are rarities rather than actual album tracks.

You both simply HAVE to buy Films for Radio ASAP. It's masterful, an instant classic. It's one of my top 5 albums of all time... that has to count for something!  :P

Your album picks are certainly better than your film picks.  Wink

David would probably agree; he no like Spirited Away.  Sad

Ironic that you say that when I'm suggesting an album called FILMS for Radio...

I've never listened to Rhine.  Where can I hear their stuff?

i completely agree, beautifulmess... isn't the poetry amazing....

back to the original thread, a new album from over the rhine!?!?!!! THAT'S exciting... .  i've heard they are also releasing a DVD of live footage from this summer's concerts with the cd this fall...  i hope that all works out!  but shoot, now i'm gonna be all antsy.     [_[

by the way, there are always audio clips from cds on amazon.com... and yes, i would definately recommend films for radio first. : )

Yeah, the DVD is slated for a December release. I'm excited about that one, too; I've heard that the acoustic versions of "The World Can Wait" and some of the other Films songs are amazing!

This is what kind of turned me off from OtR.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=music&n=507846

Read the Editorial Review.

"vapid"
"bland"
"shallow"
"vacuous"
"adult contemporary" :P

All things I hate.  What's going on here?   Why the extreme difference in opinion?

Simply put, that critic is totally off his rocker, and I can assure you that there are very few who would agree with him.

Here are some reviews that display some level of intelligence:

I can see how our esteemed Amazon reviewer might possibly have reached those conclusions if he listened to the album once, while paying attention to something else. One thing about OTR's music: you can tune out it's beauty. It doesn't smack you in the face, it tickles your fancy. Personally, I think the second Spotlight Review offers a better view of Films.

Incidentally Josh, I'm sure your spies have told you that OTR played a lot of material from Ohio Friday night. The new album has twenty-one songs, and I can personally guarantee you that seven of them are so stunningly gorgeous that Films actually does begin to seem a little shallow, by comparison. Lindford told us that the record label didn't even get to hear Ohio until it was completely finished, and that the new double album will be sold for just one dollar more than the standard cost of a single disc.

One other thing: the live version of "The World Can Wait" is just astonishing. Karin is a vision from heaven, and the new rock guitarist they're taking on tour with them adds a completely new dimension to the song. I'm not sure I even want to hear the album version, after that. This is one band that offers a unique concert experience to people who already have their cds. That live disc is probably worth $15 by itself.

What's this live disk that has "The World Can Wait" on it?  I am guessing that I really ought to stop procrastinating and go buy one of OtR's albums, either Films for Radio or Good Dog, Bad Dog.  I have so many CDs I want to buy, though. Sad

Oops. I guess I sort of made it sound like there was a live album with "The World Can Wait." What I really meant was that the live version of TWCW I saw at Cornerstone rocks, and that, based on the quality of the concert I saw, I'll bet the live album someone mentioned earlier is stellar.

You'll enjoy both, DV, but Films blows Bends out of the water. In fact, it's better than anything Radiohead's ever even thought about doing...
