We HAD a thread, but it was on the old forum and a matter of much dissention. When I get home (actually, more likely when I get to leinad's house, since he has broadband ^_^) I'll look at the trailer and see if my opinion still stands.

yes, I remember that old thread.
now the word is that there *will* be subtitles. the trailer doesn't have them but it doesn't need them, and I think that it kinda shows that the movie wouldn't *need* them either, but I'm not picky either way.

from imdb:

Mel Gibson has performed a spectacular U-turn over his controversial movie about Jesus Christ's last hours - he's decided to include subtitles after all. Gibson shocked Hollywood after announcing The Passion, which stars Jim Caviezel as Jesus and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene, would be shot in Aramaic language without the aid of subtitles - but now a Christian focus group invited to a screening of the film insists it has too many subtitles. One viewer tells American website The Scoop, "I don't know if Mel was ever serious about not having any subtitles. If he was, he has moved beyond that now. The version I saw actually had too many subtitles. We don't need distracting translations flashing on the screen when the Roman soldiers are saying obvious things like, 'Hey, you, move!' Mel noted that they were going to eliminate some of the subtitles in future edits." Meanwhile, those lucky enough to catch the rough screening rave about The Passion - and dismiss accusations it is anti-Semitic. Another viewer tells The Scoop, "The Passion is a stunning work of art. It is a devout act of worship from Mel and his collaborators. Let's get the controversy out of the way right at the top. The film is faithful to the Gospel, particularly St. John. It is no more anti-Semitic than is the Gospel."

I dunno...the idea of too many subtitles makes me think that the no-subtitle idea was better...

i'm not sure about the subtitles either, but the idea of there being none intrigued me more in a way... either way, i think this will be an AWESOME film..  even the trailer was powerful...

that makes me mad that there will be subtitles. I was looking forward to seeing the film with nothing to distract me (like cheesy translations) from the full picture of Jesus Christ and his work. Many times I have wanted to go back to see Jesus in real life and what he really looked like and what he did, and this will probably be the best picture I'll ever get to see. Even the trailer gave me goose-bumps.

I'm sorry that you'll be able to understand what they're saying...buy the DVD and turn subtitles off. Heck, why not watch all movies in French or something and be completely clueless!

I don't think either extreme is the best way to go.

We wouldn't want to be distracted from Jesus' life by something as frivilous as the words He spoke, now would we?

Haha, official Mark-bashing thread!

OK, sorry. But I do think that a happy medium will be best, and I'm sure Gibson will manage to come through for us in a great way.

After all, Jesus spoke ALL his lectures in English so we will be depriving ourselves if we don't get to at least read what the good Lord said in our own prescious language... plus, we obviously need to hear what Jesus said in English because it's not written down anywhere else!
