i know you guys all love Jack White like a little brother too, so i thought i'd get the ball rolling with this topic.

June 7th is being kicked around a lot. apparently the UK may get it in May! the Brits nearly always get cool music before we do though... for instance they already have the new Mercury Rev album, and they'll be getting the new Flaming Lips album before us too.

*wipes up puddle of drool* Me too!!! No, wait...that was vomit. Aaron, did you really think I could let a White Stripes thread go without a remark like that? I'll actually give this one a try - I have to be fair.

I'll join you in vomiting, DGP. (Well, metaphorically anyway). I don't necessarily have anything against the Stripes, but they're about as overrated as any band that I know of. The comparisons to the Beatles are just ridiculous, and, honestly, I don't think they're going to end up having much of a legacy, or any kind of longevity.

Isn't this their 5th album? Right now, that puts them past having no longevity. Also, I thought the more common comparisons were with Led Zeppelin. There's barely anything to them that's much like the Beatles.
Do I think they're overrated? Sure, but I think the blues-rock thing has plenty of potential, and Jack White does know how to play well (which is kind of a prerequisite for the style).

yes. the White Stripes are heavily hyped. but i for one think they are quite talented. the unique thing that Jack White does so well is to put a new slant on a dead horse that has been beaten to death. namely: the blues rock thingie.
so often when i listen to blues rock, all i can do is list off to myself all of the people they've wantonly ripped off.
Jack White is special because he tweaks the predictable and injects it with some originality. he's the breath of fresh air the genre has been needing a long time.
his blues rock is informed by more than just the obvious. you can hear shades of country, like Loretta Lynn and Johnny Cash in his songs. then you've got the Ramones influence etc. on the other side.
also, TWS are just plain fun to hear and play along with. i could jam on my guitar with TWS for hours and not get bored. their music is exciting and energizing. maybe he's not the poet of a generation, (i guess Bright Eyes is supposed to be that) but he doesn't pretend to be.
"I Can Tell That We Are Going To Be Friends" is about the only Stripes song that sounds overtly Paul McCartney inspired. yeah, they've got some Zeppelin sounds too. but they're going new directions with it. Zeppelin wouldn't have done anything like "Black Math."
it is totally ok not to like them. but they shouldn't be dismissed just because they are popular & hyped. keep in mind, they were doing their thing for years before they got noticed. {Bloop basically said this}
and they're following in the footsteps of The Jon Spencer Blues explosion whom i think paved the way for them.

Jack White is the reason TWS are great. He is an amazing guitar player, better than 95% of rock guitarists today. If you listen to their 4 albums out so far, you can see his prowess on his instrument. He is a very good lyricist and has alot of respect in the industry. Heck, just look at his work with Loretta Lynn. That was brilliant. TWS have improved on every album but it might be hard to top Elephant.

I have never seen them compared with the Beatles. Ever. In any way. I haven't read much press about the band at all, but I remember a discussion at another messageboard-- I think the A&F board, actually-- in which people were debating about whether or not comparing the Stripes to the Beatles was justified, so I assumed that this was common among critics and/or fans. But I may be totally off.

But I may be totally off. This thread? I don't think the thread starter's opinion is very commonly held at all. The Stripes show much more of a Zeppelin influence than a Beatles one, but they manage to have a very distinct sound that you can immediately pick up on. If you hear a White Stripes song on the radio, you'll know it's them after a few seconds in most cases. All great bands have this property, so the Stripes have that much going for them, at least. We'll have to see how they hold up over time before we can make any judgements like that, though.

I've never heard The Beatles comparison, either.
I really don't understand the whole "they're so overhyped" line of dismissal of a band anyway. Shouldn't one like a band because one likes them, not because other people do/don't? (Not that Josh or anyone else in this thread holds a solely reactionary opinion of The White Stripes. This is just a pet peeve of mine with all the scenester indie kid types around here (edit: here being Lincoln, not the phorum) who sneer at anything remotely popular.)

woohoo!!!
ITunes has the exclusive once again with the new White Stripes single "Blue Orchid." the song ROCKS! it sounds totally different too. maybe Jack has been listening to a lot of Prince or Scissor Sisters. but he's using a killer falsetto over pitch-modulated multi octave guitar licks. SWEETNESS!!!
what do you all think?

what do you all think? I've only heard it once (already getting radio play here in Atlanta), but I really liked it on the first listen. Good groove. Didn't get a chance to listen too much to the lyrics, though.

ok. i've heard Blue Orchid several times now. this song is cookin'! i seriously can't believe how raw, yet polished this song sounds. Jack's definitely not taking the easy route for a hit. there is nothing GQ or OC about this track. i was a little worried that they'd tone things down a notch or two. instead they seem to be even more blisteringly edgy than before.
i love Blue Orchid!

My ranking of their 4 albums so far:
1. Elephant 2. White Blood Cells 3. The White Stripes 4. De Stijl
I need to get a copy of De Stijl. However, I am not paying 16.99 for it. That's the only price I've seen it for so far in my efforts.

Youch! Paste reviews this album in the new issue, and they say that it's a pretty disappointing misstep for the band. They only give it 2 1/2 stars out of 5-- hardly what I would have expected, as I seem to remember Paste being a big fan of the Stripes in the past.

As great as Paste may or may not be, just because that reviewer doesn't like it won't mean it will suck. I take all reviews with a quarter of a grain of salt.

Paste gave Rob Thomas' album 1 star when they probably should have ignored it completely. so to have them give The White Stripes 2 and a half stars in the same issue is insulting.
that said, i still like Paste, nobody gets it right every time, but at least they try.

When I first saw that title "Get Behind Me Satan" I thought it might be a title of a Carmen song! LOL
I have heard of this band, and I think maybe one song...LOL...but have not really listened to them. I'm not sure I would like them, but I'm open.
describe the genre for me please...
