I admit that things are indeed looking grim, though since I actually work for
a power producing company I have seen that the industry is gradually attempting to overcome its inertia and move to alternative fuel sources. I personally care about the consumer power grid a lot more than transportation; society will survive the loss of cheap fuel for its cars but may not handle the total loss of power quite so well. If we can get our infrastructure to something other than fossil fuels then transportation will fall into place quickly as car manufacturers realize that nobody will buy traditional internal combustion vehicles anymore and all of a sudden it is in their best interests to develop efficient, economical alternatives.
