Believe it or not, some people actually do call it an octothorpe.

octothorpe--that's great.
I think I called it a tictactoe when I was little. if memory serves, I only learned it was called pound because of the people in the telephone who talked about pressing star or pound. I think I also called it "number" or "number symbol", you know, like #1 or #2 pencils.

now that I think of it, if I could, I would dub it a scritch-scratch. it looks like a scritch-scratch, doesn't it?

I should have included "number" as an option, actually. My oversight.

further enlightening reading regarding #I didn't realize that other people call it tic tac toe. and didn't even think about calling it sharp (even if it's not exactly the same symbol). funny how it is known by many names.

Someone needs to confess that they call it "hash."

Someone needs to confess that they call it "hash." That's me. A lot of my programmer friends use that term too; I don't know why. And sharp is another one I should have added, since the programming language 'C#' is pronounced 'see-sharp'.

Did someone say hasish? Kidding! "What have you got in that pipe, hashish?" I know you'll know what movie that's from, Aaron.

I'm viewing the movie in my head and trying to remember what scene that's from........... It's when they're flying Adam Sandler back to NY for the first time in that helicopter. The dude with the mustache-less beard and the guy with the massive eyebrows suddenly converge with the former saying something like, "I'm not so sure about him." Bushy eyebrow man replies with the line above. On a side note, I LOVE that movie.

I usually call it "the number symbol" or "the number sign."

That's me. A lot of my programmer friends use that term too; I don't know why. I can't believe it. I was just listening to an investor conference call replay. The call instructor said, "To pause the call, press the 'pound' or 'hash' key."
