(bloop, AMG doesn't have clips up for Ben Folds, so could you help us out here?) Here's Your Chance To Hear Ben's New Album In Its Entirety! Songs For Silverman Is Featured on VH1.com's HEAR MUSIC FIRST! You can now listen to the full-length album for one week only at VH1.com! Should be up a little while longer, I believe. Also, two of the songs are pubbed.

OK, time for me to weigh in on Sufjan Stevens. Sheesh, what a disappointing album. I mean, Michigan was a cool state and all, but honestly, who gives a flying frick about Illinois? 2 stars.
Ha ha, just kidding. Come on, y'all knew I would love this album to death. In a way I was foolish to have such huge expectations of lightning striking twice with this album... fortunately, the Infinite Improbability Drive kicked in, and Sufjan hit another home run. I just don't know how he does it. The musical style is undeniably Michigan-style Sufjan, and there are moments when I felt at first that it was just revisiting musical ideas from Michigan, but you know, there's a lot new here, too. And hey, it's not like everyone else is using the style, so he can do it ten more times as far as I'm concerned if the results are at least as varied as they were here. (Maybe 50 times would be a bit much, but I digress). This is a masterfully crafted album that I can't wait to write up a review of. It'll be the album to beat for 2005. 5 stars.

Dang. I was in such a rush, I hastily didn't exempt you from my 4 star pile even though I knew you would go with some variety of A for that album. Oh well, my bad - I still get 5 I guess.
Ben Folds's album is a 4 star effort. It's more mature than Rockin'..., definitely, but the funnier moments like the title track of that album aren't here. Ben is often at his most brilliant when he's ripping on some aspect of the music culture, and I personally missed that, but he still takes some fair swings at the culture at large. Still, there's some dandy piano work here, as always, and, at the very least, "Jesusland" is a heckuva place to visit.

I give Undone 2 stars. It's not totally awful, but there are a lot of negatives. Except for a few moments, the music is boring, the lyrics are nothing special, and Never Alone was probably the worst of the bunch. It's listenable, but I wouldn't advise anyone to run out and buy it, if anything, borrow it so you don't waste money.

I'm not convinced that Springsteen has crafted one of the finest albums of his career, and a shoo-in for my 2005 top 10. You're not convinced, or you're now convinced?

Shaun Groves manages to blend his first and second album together masterfully on White Flag. There are a few missteps musically here and there, but overall a very fine album. 4 stars

Rob Thomas - ... Something to Be
I almost feel like this should be classified in the "guilty pleasures" section because there's such a stigma attached to Rob and Matchbox 20 as a pop-rock, make what sells type of band, but i've always been somewhat fond of the group as a whole and Rob's vocals have a lot of character to them. As i approached STB, i was looking for the reasons why it was a solo album and to see if Rob would stretch himself musically and vocally.
Honestly, i think he did just that. STB is quite distinct from MB20 project and Rob pushes his vocals to great lengths to capture a soulful sound that keeps the album interesting. The touches from Great Anointing and other guests (including Robert Randolph) really make the album stick out. I've listened to it a lot, taken some time away from it and come back to it and it still strikes me as a solid album.
That said, i'm gonna go with 4 STARS for Rob Thomas.
peace... love... bdg...

You're not convinced, or you're now convinced? Who are you quoting? EDIT: Ah, I see BDG's response. I'm curious what Josh actually had to say, so if he wouldn't mind reposting, that would be great.

ACK. I'm such an idiot. Josh said some stuff about how he wasn't sure if it would be one of Springsteen's best and it would take some time to grow on him, etc., and he concluded that he was not convinced it was an excellent album, a shoo-in for his Top 10 for 2005, stuff like that. The not didn't seem to make sense in the context of his rating (which was 5 stars, by the way), so that's how I extrapolated now.

Sorry I'm late, I meant to post late last night so this wouldn't happen but I got tired and went to sleep instead.
I'm going to go with 3 stars. It almost seems too high because the music isn't all that creative or diverse, but the lyrics are some great stuff. Considering some of the restraints the album seems to put on itself, it's pretty solid. The places where the music just flows well and the lyrics make this one worth the full 3 stars to me.

Well, I had a sucky round. Congratulations to Danny, though, who scored a 9.2, the highest score for a single round so far. Round 7 is up.
