since we've started to share some cool guitar chords i figured we might as well start a thread for easy reference.
basically these are the only ground rules i'm suggesting: don't just copy & paste from OLGA or Rockin' With The Cross. Chances are, all the musicians here know about them, and other places like them.
we can do something really cool and unique here. only post songs that are not readily available elsewhere. basically that means most of what we Phorumers like to listen to. i get frustrated searching out guitar chords for my favorite artists only to find *nothing*.
i'll try and re-post some that were already posted to get the thread started properly.
oh, and try to be accurate. this isn't a "who can tab the fastest" contest. post at your ease. this could be really cool.

The basic chords for "Firefly" reminded me of another song that I really love to play:
Lesser Things by Jars of Clay
Intro C D Em
Verse 1 {C}Looks a {D}lot like {Em}givin' up {C} {D} {Em} {C}Peace will {D}bring us a {Em}bitter cup {C} {D} {Em} Set our {C}bodies {D}down like {Em}offerings {C} {D} {Em} While we {C}pray to the {D}god of the {Em}lesser things {A} {C}
C D Em (3x) A C
Verse 2 If the {C}wind should {D}shake this {Em}house apart {C} {D} {Em} The {C}cradle hits the {D}ground with a {Em}broken heart {C} {D} {Em} Will we {C}say we {D}never {Em}knew a thing {C} {D} {Em} While we {C}pray to the {D}god of the {Em}lesser things {A} {C}
Chorus Is there {G}grace for a wayward {Am}heart Is there {G}grace for a wayward {Am}heart {G}Grace, {F}grace
C D Em (3x) A
Verse 3 {C}Ash to {D}ash and {Em}dust to dust {C} {D} {Em} {C}Steel on {D}steel or {Em}rain to rust {C} {D} {Em} What {C}mortal {D}breath blood {Em}money brings {C} {D} {Em} {C}Forth from the {D}altar of the {Em}lesser things {A} {C}
(Repeat Chorus)
Bridge C F C F Am D7 Am D7
Chorus Is there {G}grace for a wayward {Am}heart Is there {G}grace for a wayward {Am}heart {G}Grace, {F}grace Is there {C}grace for a wayward {Dm}heart Is there {C}grace for a wayward {Dm}heart {C}Grace, {Bb}grace
Outro F G Am
(Love that little key change near the end.)

I am suddenly feeling really stupid for only knowing how to read tabs (and not chords). I've kind of self-taught myself some acoustic guitar stuff. I've figured out Mortal's "Rift" and Starflyer59's "Wake Up Early" but I haven't had a chance to write up tabs for them yet. I'll try to post those two (or at least the Starflyer one - I'm not sure if anyone else here is into Mortal or not) soon.

Murlough, do you happen to know what chord shape Jars is using for the C-D-Em in the intro? It doesn't seem to be the standard ones in the first three frets since they seem to be shifting the note on the high string to walk down and walk up.

I haven't figured out how they get those exact notes; I just know the basic chords behind them. I would surmise that they're using an alternate tuning of some sort. If anyone has OtR's "Spark" chords that would be most lovely.

I don't know the chords to "Spark," but I do know that's that straight-up pop song progression, chord-wise.

Does anyone here have(or know where I can get) full transcriptions(tabs+chords for all guitar parts) for Burlap to Cashmere and Steven D.'s solo stuff? They have some of my favorite acoustic guitar parts ever, but I can't pick them up by ear to save my life. Also, none of the usual tab sites have very much of their stuff. If anyone can help with this, I'd be very happy.

of course you may post tabs too. however, just make sure they are as clear and easy to read as possible.
i prefer to ad-lib lead parts, that is why i like just chords and lyrics. but some people prefer tabs to chords, and that is cool too.
post away!

I'm trying to figure out Sufjan Steven's "Holland" right now. It's a tricky song and there's no way I'm going to tab every single beautiful note of it, but here's my best approximation. The weird thing is that to play this with the CD, you have to tune your whole guitar down about 1/4 step from standard Drop D - the song appears to be floating in between standard keys or something. (Either that or my tuner's just really off.) Then slap a capo on he 2nd fret and try the following:
Intro/Verse
D2 C2 G/B D2 Fmaj7 Asus A
Chorus (the part where he sings "Ah, hah-hoh-hah" or whatever)
Fmaj7 C2 G/B D2 Fmaj7 C2 Am
You'll need to vary these slightly to get the exact right voicings... I don't know quite how to name these chords. If anyone can interpret this more accurately, I'd appreciate it.

I just figured out the basic chords to "Thou Lovely Source of True Delight", as heard on Jars of Clay's latest album. It's pretty basic - the intro is throwing me off a little bit, but some noodling around with the song's main chord (E, or D if you capo) should fix that.
(Capo II)
Thou (D)lovely source of (Am7)true delight, whom (G)I unseen a(D)dore Un©veil Thy beauties (G)to my sight, that (D)I might love Thee (Am7)more Oh that ©I might (G)love Thee (D)more
Just repeat that for every single verse, and you're good to go.
If you don't want to capo, it's just:
E - Bm7 - A - E D - A - E - Bm7 D - A - E

OK, I'm on a roll tonight. Here's "Jesus, I Lift My Eyes", also by Jars. I might be mixing up some majors and minors (you know Bm instead of D, etc.), but it's close enough.
Intro Em7 Bm F#m G Em7 D A
Verse 1 Em7 Bm F#m G When sins and fears prevailing rise Em7 D A And fainting hope almost expires Em7 Bm F#m G Jesus to Thee I lift my eyes Em7 D A To Thee I breathe my soul's desires Em7 Bm F#m G Are You not mine, my living Lord Em7 D A And can my hope, my comfort die Em7 Bm D-A-G Fixed on the everlasting word Em7 Bm D-A-G That word which built the earth and sky
Chorus Em7 A F#m G Jesus, I lift my eyes Em7 A F#m G To Thee I breathe my soul's desires Em7 A F#m G Jesus, I lift my eyes Em7 A D To Thee I lift my eyes
Verse 2 Em7 Bm F#m G Here let my faith unshaken dwell Em7 D G Immovable the promise stands Em7 Bm D-A-G Not all the powers of earth or hell Em7 Bm D-A-G Can e'er dissolve the sacred bands Em7 Bm D-A-G Jesus to Thee I lift my eyes
(Repeat Chorus) Bm Here oh my soul, Thy trust repose D If Jesus is forever mine Bm Not death itself, that last of foes G A Can break a union so divine
Instrumental Break Em7 A F#m G Em7 A D
Chorus Em7 A F#m G Jesus, I lift my eyes Em7 A F#m G To Thee I breathe my soul's desires Em7 A F#m G Jesus, I lift my eyes Em7 A F#m G To Thee I breathe my soul's desires
etc.

For my fellow Sam Phillips fans here is a treat from "Fandance." I'm in the process of figuring out my favorite Sam songs. I got several done over the weekend, {waiting to be typed up} that I may post as well if pholks are interested.
How To Dream by Sam Phillips
Intro: B / Bsus / B - E - F#m - E - F#m
Chorus: B - / Bsus / - B Ah .... Ah .....Ah Ah...Ah... E - F#m - E - F#m When we open our eyes and dream we open our eyes B - / Bsus / - B Ah .... Ah .....Ah Ah...Ah... E - F#m - E - F#m When we open our eyes and dream we open our eyes
Verse 1: G#m - Eb - E - Eb Under normal we change the wind G#m - Eb - E - Eb Facing every direction B - A - G#m - E Planted in the future we live two lives C#m - F#m -C#m - F#m All to reveal a secret we can't hide
Verse 2: G#m - Eb - E - Eb We search the sky planets chasing stars G#m - Eb - E - Eb Pulling toward deep affection B - A - G#m - E Weights and numbers measure a wound that won't heal C#m - F#m -C#m - F#m All to reveal a secret we can't hide
End: B - / Bsus / - B
I got inspired to figure this one out after attempting to play another person's crack at it. Let's just say that they were WAAAAAY off, but I admire them for trying to figure out a Sam song. Her songs are very difficult at times, and at other times they are so simple that it is genius that they sound so complex.

i've been rediscovering just how great the music of Marc Bolan (commonly known as T Rex) is. for those of you who are unfamiliar with him, Devendra Banhart tries his darndest to be like early Marc Bolan, especially on his song "At the Hop." Marc Bolan was hugely influential on David Bowie. if not for T Rex there may not have been a Ziggy Stardust. here are the chords to one of my favorite T Rex songs: Cosmic Dancer by Marc Bolan (T Rex) G Em i was dancing when i was twelve (2x) F C i was dancing when i was ahh (2x) G Em i danced myself right out the womb (2x) F C is it strange to dance so soon F C i danced myself right out of the womb (Am) oh (D) ah ah ha (D7) G Em i was dancing when i was eight (2x) F C is it strange to dance so late (2x) G Em i danced myself into the tomb (2x) F C is it strange to dance so soon F C i danced myself into the tomb (Am) oh (D) ah ah ha (D7) G Em is it wrong to understand G Em the fear that dwells inside a man. F C what's it like to be a loon F C i liken it to a balloon G Em i danced myself out of the womb (2x) F C is it strange to dance so soon F C i danced myself into the tomb (Am) oh (D) ah ah ha (D7) Here is a link to a clip: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=glance&s=music

Anyone able to help? The whole song is A, B, C#m, and E, though not necessarily in order (though a lot of it travels up and down between A, B, and C#m). I had it worked out at one point, but never wrote it down. Thing is, you might have to capo it somewhere to get it in the right key. But use "open E" chords (i.e. you should never have to hold down the two highest-pitched strings).

Another fun one from Steven Delopoulos is "Here I Go Again". It's mostly Fmaj7 and Cmaj7, with maybe a few G's in the bridge. Beautiful song.

Here's "Come On! Feel the Illinoise!" by Sufjan Stevens. It requires a little embellishing on the repetitive C chords by switching it out with Cmaj7 and C6, or using a free finger to add other notes to C (which I like to do in order to mimic the descending chorus line that cimes in), as well as being able to strum in 5/8 time, but it's a fun thing to try to figure out.

Does anyone here play electric guitar? I got one for Christmas, and I want to find some software to make it sound better than running it through a little 10-watt amp. I have decent speakers for my home computer, and I know it would sound better coming through them. Do any of you know of good software titles that allow you to plug in your guitar and get nice effects similar to pedals, etc.? Free software, of course. Thanks!

Some new Vienna Teng songs that I just figured out...
BLUE CARAVAN (Note: You can pick out the main cello line if you just hold Em, take your finger off of the A string for Am, and take your finger off of the D string for D. The D chord isn't exactly the way it sounds on the CD because the bass note would need to be lower, so you can either improvise the way I've done it here or you can tune to drop D and play Em with three fingers instead of two.)
(Capo 2)
Intro Em Em Am Em D Em Em Am Em D Em
Verse 1 Em Am Em D Em Blue, blue caravan, winding down to the valley of lights Em Am Em D Em My true love is a man who would hold me for ten thousand nights D Asus A In the wild, wild wailing of wind C D Em He's a house 'neath a soft yellow moon D Asus A So blue, blue caravan C D Em Won't you carry me down to him soon
Em Am Em D Em Em Am Em D Em
Verse 2 Em Am Em D Em Blue, blue caravan, won't you drive away all of these tears Em Am Em D Em For my true love is a man that I haven't seen in years D Asus A He said, “Go where you have to, for I belong to you C D Em Until my dying day” D Asus A So like a fool, blue caravan C D Em I believed him and I walked away
Em Am Em D Em Yeah... Em Am Em D Em Ohhh... Yeah...
Verse 3 Em Am Em D Em Oh, my blue, blue caravan, oh the highway is my great wall Em Am Em D Em For my true love is a man who never existed at all D Asus A Oh, he was a beautiful fiction C D Em I invented to keep out the cold D Asus A But now, my blue, blue caravan C D Em I can feel my heart growing old D Asus A Oh, my blue, blue caravan C D Em I can feel my heart growing old
Em Am Em D Em Em Am Em D Em
LOVE TURNS 40 (Note: trying to imitate the song's bass line with guitar chords is a bit tricky. Basically the first three notes fit the E minor chord, then you do a very quick run on the bottom string through E-F#-G and then finally hit A2 twice. That's my best approximation that sounds decent on guitar. Just listen and you'll get the rhythm.)
Intro Em Em-Em/F#-G A2 Em Em-Em/F#-G A2
Verse 1 Em Em-Em/F#-G A2 She's holding a secret that she'll never tell Em Em-Em/F#-G A2 She's holding a secret that she'll never tell C Because the myth is not supposed to retire G We'd rather it lit itself on fire G A2 Em Or overdosed in a 4-star hotel
Verse 2 Em Em-Em/F#-G A2 She's holding a truth that she'll never reveal Em Em-Em/F#-G A2 She's holding a truth that she'll never reveal C Because truth this time is an ugly child G And mother and daughter may reconcile G A2 E But their faces will never heal
Chorus 1 Cmaj7 "Don't go", she says, but he's sleeping G She says it to herself Cmaj7 "Don't go", she sees herself rising E7 E Packing a suitcase with all of her shoes Fmaj7 But something keeps you faithful Bb A When all else in you turns and runs B Em Love turns 40, the morning comes
(Repeat Intro)
Verse 3 Em Em-Em/F#-G A2 She's holding a secret that she'll never tell Em Em-Em/F#-G A2 She's holding a secret that she'll never tell C Because we were once cinema gods in the night G And now all we've got is lunch-hour light G A2 E Where nothing photographs well
Chorus 2 Cmaj7 "Don't go", she says, but he's sleeping G She says it to the dark Cmaj7 "Don't go", she sees herself rising E7 E Dressing in silence for nothing to lose Fmaj7 But something keeps you faithful Bb A When all else in you turns and runs B E Love turns 40, the morning comes
Bridge E Am C Fmaj7 (6x)
Outro Em Em-Em/F#-G A2 Em Em-Em/F#-G A2
1BR/1BA
This one's all A and D. Beyond that, you're on your own.
