I work at 2 radio stations, owned by the same people. Anyways, one of the stations switched from top 40 music to sports/talk about a year ago. In the studio is a shelf-full of CD's that are not in use, so yesterday, I browsed through them, and picked out U2-All that You can't leave behing, Coldplay-Parachutes, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals-Burn to Shine (I think that's the title), and Black Eyed Peas-Bridging the Gap, then called my boss up, and he said I could have them...
I haven't even gotten around to listening to the Coldplay album...(I do enjoy their 2nd one), but I am really liking the U2 album (it's my first by them), and Ben Harper I like as well...I haven't listened to any BEP either, as I also bought the Jason Mraz album this weekend, and have been listening to that one a lot...
Anyways, any of you that have these albums...what did you think of them? I know they are a few years old...

All That You Can't Leave Behind is my second favorite album of all time. I love it to death. Parachutes is no masterpiece, but I like it more than the other Coldplay album.

Parachutes is a good album. It's jazzy, it's understated, it's NOT sleepy, it's dissonant in spots. I like it better than A Rush of...
Bridging The Gap is good in that it doesn't fall prey to the stoooopid lyrics of Elephunk. Cool music to get down to, without the numbing agents of the latter.
All That You Can't Leave Behind is good. It grows on you. "New York" is entrancing. I'm biased towards this track, though.
Peace out, Andree

Andree, you're the only other person I know to prefer Parachutes to Rush of Blood. We need to start a support group or something. Ironically, "New York" used to be my least favorite song on ATYCLB, but I love it now. Larry's drum cadence kicks arse, and Bono is, as always, the man.

i like Parachutes ok, but i honestly think that Coldplay is just an artistic DMB . . .
oh, and New York has one of the coolest lines i've heard "In New York freedom seems like too many choices" that's such a cool lyric.

"In New York freedom seems like too many choices" YES! That's an all-time favorite line of mine, as well. Though it's "looks," not "seems." =)

I have mixed feelings about Jason Mraz... I love "The Remedy" and after reading David's review of the disc I'm interested in digesting it a little bit more.
I want to hear Parachutes because I love Rush.... and ATYCLB is excellent. I love it.

I like "A Rush..." a little more, I think, but they're not that distant from each other anyway.
"All That You Can't Leave Behind" is U2's third best album, behind both "Achtung Baby!" and "The Joshua Tree". That said, it's pretty great (I mean, these are U2's standards we're talking about).

Pssst- where did Jason Mraz come into this? I agree with bloop about ATYCLB being the third best U2 album, though, in terms of personal preference, it's my second favorite.

I made a passing mention of buying the Mraz album this weekend in my first post...so I think that's where it came from...
Josh, what do you think of the Mraz album?
I tend to agree with David's review for the most part...I really like the album...

Not a big fan of Mraz, truth be told. His songwriting is witty, but often kind of empty, and he seems a bit full of himself. Still, it's got some good tracks on it. He shows promise.

i love parachutes, but i've never been able to decide whether i like rush of blood better. they each are for different moods.
as for u2, i think i like ATYCLB better than achtung baby. i think i'd go: joshua tree, ATYCLB, and then achtung. however, the u2 cd i listen to the most is the best of 1980's. i'm not usually a fan of 'best of' cds, but in this case, it's my favorite.
and as for mraz: he has a very cool name, and his songs are amazingly catchy. that's about all there is to him, i think.

Heresy! Thou shalt not put any U2 album before "Achtung Baby!" Actually, I think Joshua Tree is a better album in most respects, though Achtung Baby does outcool it in some regards.

I think "Achtung Baby!" is a tad better than "The Joshua Tree", but they are very different from each other and certainly both 5 star albums (if you look at my list in cmcentral, both make the top for their respective years).

I believe it's called "Burn to Shine"...the album is alright, although I've heard that's it's definitely not his best work...

To be honest, I don't know if either one is "better" than the other. I just rate "Achtung Baby!" a little higher because I think it is more consistently good from beginning to end. The best material from "Joshua Tree" is as good as the best from "Achtung".
"One", "Bullet the Blue Sky", "The Fly", "Mysterious Ways", "Where the Streets...", "With or Without You", "Acrobat"...all pretty fantastic IMO.

Cool points for bloop for mentioning "Acrobat," the second most underrated song in the U2 canon.
Anyone want to take a guess at #1?

Well, I'm trying to guess within Josh's mind:
Is it something from "POP"? "Miami" maybe?

No, actually, "Miami" used to be my least favorite U2 song, and it's still my least favorite on Pop.
I'll give you a hint: It's from the 80s.

I'll never guess right, Josh. They have a lot of 80s songs. I'll try anyway..."Red Hill Mining Town"?

Actually, that's #3 on the list. #1, in my humble but accurate opinion, is "Running to Stand Still."
Honorable mentions: "Like a Song," "In A Little While," "Ultraviolet," "The First Time."

Coldplay, an intelligent DMB? Hardly. More like a mushy, sentimental, and sometimes clever Britpop act. I enjoy their music, but comparing them to the DMB is ludicrous. These guys wouldn't know a free-form jam if it came with peanut butter on their sandwiches.
