Went to the used bookstore and found three new CDs for 8 bucks apiece:
David Bowie- Heathen Beck- Mutations Miles David- Birth of the Cool
All three are excellent. Bowie's album easily makes my Top 5 from 2002. Mutations is fascinating and fun, though not as good as Sea Change. And Birth of Cool is great, though not nearly as good as Kind of Blue.
Anyone heard these?

I'm a patheric loser, with a narrow mind musically, who's never listened to any of those albums In fact, although I've heard of all of them, I've only listened to ONE song by those three combined...that Beck song that goes, "I got 2 turtables and a microphone"...or something... Beck has been on my list of artists to check out for awhile now, however...where should I start?

Beck's a loser Paul, you are a putz . . . and, Josh i assume you meant Miles Davis not David . . . anyway not many jazz albums can touch Kind of Blue but Birth of Cool is a splendid endeavor . . . though, i'm more of a Coltrane fan than Miles . . . peace . . . love . . . bdg . . .

Re: Beck: My favorite album of his is Sea Change, but I've only heard two of his records, so I'm no expert.
Re: Miles DaviS: Kind of Blue is my favorite jazz album. Personally, I like Miles much more than Coltrane, though John's got some great sax work on Kind of Blue.

Beck's a loser Paul, you are a putz . . . Ha ha ha TRu...believe me, I've NEVER heard that one before... Anyways, as luck would have it, while making my semi-weekly pilgrimage to Wal Mart (the only place in town that sells CD's...besides a really small Christian bookstore), I was browsing through CD's, in hopes of finding something that was, 1) cheap and 2) not crap... I stumbled across Miles Davis-Kind of Blue, and remembering that the TRu gave it praise, I decided to buy it...If I don't like it, TRu, you owe me 9 dollars... B) This is the first jazz album I've ever listened to...so I'm taking a step into new territory here...I'll let you know what I think of it once I listen through it all...

Kind of Blue is my favorite jazz album, so if you dislike it, I'll take a small fraction of the blame. But Tru gets most of it. =)

I just finished listening through the whole album... WOW ...I like it a lot...it's so smooth and relaxing...I think Jazz made a good first impression on me Maybe I should give the TRu 9 dollars for his suggestion... Oh , and Josh can have a pat on the back or something...

I'm hijacking your thread, Josh.
In the mail yesterday, I got:
Common Children - Skywire Chasing Furies - With Abandon The Five O'Clock People - The Nothing Venture The Choir - Free Flying Soul
for about $1.99 a piece, from SecondSpin.com. I've listened to the first 3 - though I haven't really been able to sit down and completely concentrate on the music yet.
Skywire is way different that what I was expecting...in a good way...I was thinking Mark Byrd...God of Wonders (and ack, GlassByrd)...but it's much less mellow. I'm going to have to listen to it again, but it seemed a touch repetitive.
The Five O'Clock People album is awesome - they remind me of Jars of Clay. I get the feeling that this will be one of those albums that I like more and more every time I listen to it.
Chasing Furies is the best of the bunch, so far, I think. Very poetic lyrics.
...and I'm awaiting the new Shaun Groves album - stupid slow international shipping, won't be here for another week or two...

Chasing Furies - With Abandon The Five O'Clock People - The Nothing Venture
These are two of the best records to ever come out of CCM. Excellent choices. mutations is fabulous, especially "nobody's fault but my own." good choice josh. I concur. This album is quite a trip, and it's one well worth taking. You nailed my favorite track, as well.

I'll continue with the high jacking of Josh's thread... This ties in a bit with the jazz discussion going on earlier.. Josh, have you ever listened to "A Tribe Called Quest"? They are a hip hop group, whose best work was in the late 80's early 90's...they had a great fusion of jazz and hip hop, and are considered one of the most artful hip hop groups ever...I know you don't like hip hop much, but I would be interested to see what you thought of the Tribe ...

Chasing Furies - With Abandon The Five O'Clock People - The Nothing Venture Right there you have the two best albums released in 1999. (Yeah, that's right, even above If I Left the Zoo.) Regarding Common Children - never got into their stuff because Marc Byrd always had this dreary electric guitar strum that seemed to suck the life out of anyting he ever touched (including Christine Glass's second solo album and the GlassByrd disc). Though it would be funny to hear the guy who co-wrote "God of Wonders" singing "I hate myself". NP: "Different ind of Free", ZoeGirl

I'm liking the Common Children CD the least out of the 4 I got. It just gets annoying after a while, I don't know why. The Choir is really different...but I love "The Ocean". The Five O'Clock People and Common Children are going to be amoung my favorites for some time, I think.
