Have a Happy Read

A few thoughts on my part.

I didn't know My Immortal was a breakup song, I had read it was about a friend of Amy Lee's who committed suicide.

That women's prison song sounds very odd.

Now I'm interested in hearing the original version of Hurt, as I'm only familiar with Cash's version.

I like their choice for number 1.

I would have added Gary Jules song Mad World, man, is that ever depressing.

14. Comfortably Numb Pink Floyd (1979)
This classic rock dirge appears on Pink Floyd's notorious magnum opus The Wall, the one album you can never listen to in its entirety unless you own a bong the size of a mop.

I found this line especially humorous.  laugh

That made me want to hear that album even more.

I was impressed to see the inclusion of "Prayers For Rain" from the fantasticly gloomy "Disintegration" album by The Cure. Though I'd argue that "The Same Deep Water As You" from the same album is even more morose. But only slightly.

some others i'd put in my list if i were to make one:

Wedding Dress - Derek Webb
If You See Her Say Hello - Bob Dylan
Dagger - Slowdive
Blue Spanish Sky - Chris Isaak
Soma - Smashing Pumpkins
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley's version
Caroline No - The Beach Boys
Down In A Hole - Alice In Chains
Shattered - The Cranberries
Pillars (or) Tearing In My Heart - Sunny Day Real Estate
I Never Knew You From The Sun - The Innocence Mission
Over the Rhine - Latter Days
Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
Ohio - Damien Jurado
Holes - Mercury Rev
The Hand Song - Nickel Creek
Around My Neck - 100 Portraits
Secret Lives - Waterdeep
Criticism as Inspiration - Pedro The Lion
*honorable mention* Casimir Pulaski Day - Sufjan Stevens
The Dance - Garth Brooks (let me clarify by saying i do not own any Garth Brooks albums, but this song is woefully sad.)

oh, my Pink Floyd pick would be "Mother," also from The Wall.

there are many more. but these would be on my list.

Really anything from Blood on the Tracks or Sea Change would work.

My dad and I joke that you have to drop major acid to enjoy anything but "Us and Them" and "Dark Side of the Moon" (just that song, not the entire album).

I enjoy "Comfortably Numb", "Us & Them", "Dark Side", etc., and I've never done an illegal drug in my life.  I've always been puzzled by those kinds of statements.

I meant those songs can be enjoyed without taking drugs.  The rest, though, requires angel dust or something.

ditto bloop.

in fact, statements like that kept me from giving them (Pink Floyd) a chance until i was 20. now i love their music. and you most certainly do not have to do anything illegal to enjoy their art. i used to have a tendency to judge a band or artist by the fans they had. i still do sometimes, but not so much as before.

but some stereotypes are hard to shake:

Pink Floyd = drug addled freak fans
Dave Matthews Band = pseudo-intellectual, ultra liberal, hackey sack playing, 'free loving' fans
Seether / Trapt / Nickelback / Limp Bizkit / Blink 182 et al = blithering idiot fans with absolutely no artistic taste who equate loudness with talent
Bob Marley = doper fans
Lynyrd Skynyrd = confederate flag waving, white pointy hat wearing, redneck fans

there are more, but you get the drift.

I don't really like Pink Floyd overall (they way overrated, and their vocals are generally lacking), but I do enjoy Dark Side of the Moon and Obscured by Clouds. I also like the songs Us and Them and Comfortably Numb. But I can't stand The Wall.

No, I don't think I've ever heard that one before.  Wink

I think Floyd's more popular works (Dark Side and especially The Wall) are overrated, but I've enjoyed some of their lesser-known albums, with Wish You Were Here being my favorite.

since this has become an unofficial home for Pink Floyd discussion, i'll list my favorite albums of theirs:

1. Meddle
2. Wish You Were Here
3. The Wall
4. Dark Side Of The Moon
5. Animals

The Wall was like a silly comic book set to music.  That said, I can appreciate that approach more than I appreciate most double albums (which generally automatically get tagged as ambitious if nothing else).  Dark Side is pretty interesting to me, but I too prefer Wish You Were Here to just about any of them.

Some stereotypes are hard to shake, but others are just true.  I think I largely agree with about 2 of those anyway.

And here I've only heard one Pink Floyd album, Dark Side of the Moon, it didn't blow me away, but it was good.

Well, you simply haven't cried a good cry until you've heard "Passage" by Vienna Teng. I actually think there's some hope hidden in that song, but on the surface, it's utterly devastating.

Of course, if you want a truly depressing album, go listen to The Space in Between Us by the ever-popular Building 429, and you'll realize what a truly sad state the Christian music industry is in.

EDIT: I made that comment about the Christian music industry before realizing that a CCM band actually had the top slot on the list.  laugh

I still think Newsboys' "Elle G." should have been on there.
