ok...I just typed out a huge thing and then my comp went 'crazy'...trying again! LOL

I'm surprised that THIS TEST has not been stolen from the CMC yet...it might go a long way to understanding each others veiws...some don't like it, but for me it was bang on!

My results

You scored as Emergent/Postmodern.

You are Emergent/Postmodern in your theology. You feel alienated from older forms of church, you don't think they connect to modern culture very well. No one knows the whole truth about God, and we have much to learn from each other, and so learning takes place in dialogue. Evangelism should take place in relationships rather than through crusades and altar-calls. People are interested in spirituality and want to ask questions, so the church should help them to do this.

Emergent/Postmodern 93%

Roman Catholic 61%

Classical Liberal 43%

Neo orthodox 43%

Modern Liberal 43%

Charismatic/Pentecostal 43%

Evangelical Holiness/Wesleyan 36%

Reformed Evangelical 0%

You are an evangelical in the Wesleyan tradition. You believe that God's grace enables you to choose to believe in him, even though you yourself are totally depraved. The gift of the Holy Spirit gives you assurance of your salvation, and he also enables you to live the life of obedience to which God has called us. You are influenced heavly by John Wesley and the Methodists.

and this surprises me greatly, and then again it doesn't.

the Methodist church today has largely stopped following the teachings of John Wesley. so in that respect, i am very much NOT Methodist.

but i do agree with much of what Wesley preached.
so the quiz betrays it's ignorance of the current doctrinal stance of the United Methodist Church. but it is correct that my beliefs are not that disimilar to classic Methodist thought.

though i consider myself to be Protestant with some Baptist leanings. but ultimately i trust God's Word over any denomination's stance.

i won't speak in ignorance about Barth. i'm simply not familiar with his teachings.

but Shelby Spong is the man i consider to be the most dangerous influential "theologian" alive today. he denies the virgin birth for starters. i read part of "Why Christianity Must Change Or Die" just to get his story straight. he's a spritual mess. this man has no clue who the true God of the Bible is. his god is powerless and small.

avoid his books at all costs except for ammo in dealing with his growing number of followers.

Not sure about the second guy, but Karl Barth was the author of Neo-Orthodoxy, one of the most important theologians of the last century, and, quite frankly, a douchebag.

No surprise here. And that paragraph couldn't sum me up any better! Wink

You scored as Fundamentalist.

You are a fundamentalist. You take the Bible as the foundation of your faith and read it very literally, and it shapes your worldview. Non-fundamentalist Christians have watered-down the Gospel in your view, and academic study of the Bible stops us from 'taking God at his word.' Science is opposed to faith, as it contradicts basic biblical truths.

Evangelical Holiness/Wesleyan 79%

Neo orthodox 68%

Reformed Evangelical 64%

Emergent/Postmodern 57%

Roman Catholic 14%

That's shame Paul.  To think that science is directly opposed to faith is to disregard God's creation and call Him a liar

a lot of the questions were hard to answer in a radio button way. and I kept wanting to ask "what is this question getting at?" maybe I just don't know what I believe anymore, as far as brief statements go. anyway, here's what I got. *shrug* if I'm influenced heavily by John Wesley, I'm not aware of it.

I read one article by Sponge (and by read I mean I skimmed it...LOL)

some of his views seem rather 'openness. God isn't omniscient/omnipotent (and some of those other omni words) But he seems to go alot further... and doesn't seem to believe in a spiritual side much at all...and the site I got the article from is pro-assisted suicide!  Shocked

You scored as Roman Catholic. You are Roman Catholic. Church tradition and ecclesial authority are hugely important, and the most important part of worship for you is mass. As the Mother of God, Mary is important in your theology, and as the communion of saints includes the living and the dead, you can also ask the saints to intercede for you.

Have your read anything from 'Brian McLaren'? If you haven't ...give it a go...he is very encouraging to the PoMo/emerg people.
I read New Kind of Christian awhile ago, haven't been able to get a hold of anything else.

Well, if you are ever 'yankering' for some Brian (or maybe Don Miller if you haven't read him) I'm willing to 'hook you up' ...I've sent some stuff out to Danny and to Celly (Mike).

Bloop - I like the 'Mrs. Bloop's...I'm quite pro-catholic

THIS is the latest Emerg book out, I haven't read it yet, but I'm very eager to (it's not a Brian book)...and Generous Orthodoxy is good, as well as adventures in missing the point that Brian does with Tony compolo

I'm curious how Mrs. Bloop scored so heavily Roman Catholic, and even more curious as to why you are pro-catholic when they are so anti women being ordained as ministers?

I'd love to get ahold of some more stuff. I haven't read Don Miller, though I have heard the name before.

Hey...if I was only 'pro churches who ordain female ministers' I would not be much for church at all...LOL...and I don't have to attend in order to be pro...and I have never wanted to be a priest...but even Nuns have more ministry rights than most evangi women.

Well, I would never go to a church that won't ordain women, and I'm even thinking of not going to a church that will ordain women but won't let them lead the church!
That would narrow it down considerably. I have recently talked to many pastors who seem to think they are so nice in ordaining women, but who balk at letting them lead the church, all because of Paul's completely cultural remarks.
If I can't find a church that will let women lead the church I am perfectly contenet with not going. The Bible says 'do not forsake the gathering of brethern' but I don't consider people, men or women, who deny women the right to be ordained as 'brethern'. I can get along with them, and even be their friends, but I could not, in all good conscience' fellowship with them.

I'm not sure they asked a question on women pastors with that quiz.  I think Lutheranism just has a lot of similarities with Catholicism.

but Shelby Spong is the man i consider to be the most dangerous influential "theologian" alive today. he denies the virgin birth for starters. i read part of "Why Christianity Must Change Or Die" just to get his story straight. he's a spritual mess. this man has no clue who the true God of the Bible is. his god is powerless and small.

avoid his books at all costs except for ammo in dealing with his growing number of followers.
do you know if he is in the same 'camp' as openess theologyns like Clark Pinnok and Gregory Boyd? Or is that a whole other can of worms?
honestly i don't know if he's, (Spong) specifically an open theist, but he shares in some of their views. as you stated, he's not very into God being "omni" anything. that's just part of why i find him to be above and beyond the most dangerous "theologian" alive. people actually take him to heart. but he's a prime example of one who has "exchanged the Gospel for a lie." in the past, "theologians" such as he would have been laughed at, at best; and run out of town at worst.

i doubt i have to clarify, but just so everyone knows, i am NOT an advocate of open theism.

Maybe homosexuality has become the 'bigger' issue so that the women issue doesn't look as bad as it used to...it seems like the church has to have at least one thing that it really hates!  unsure

You scored as Evangelical Holiness/Wesleyan.

Seems pretty accurate given that I've grown up in the Methodist church (and have many family members going back several generations who preached in the Methodist church). I noticed post-modern was very close, though. The one area of emergent I wholly agree with is the part about being able to learn from other traditions and the emphasis on dialoge as a form of evangalism.

I scored tied with Postmodern and Wesleyan. The Wesleyan didn't surprise me much as I was raised Methodist, but my reformed evangelical was a relatively low score, which surprises me, because I'm a member of the RCA. Slightly strange, I guess I don't even believe what my own church preaches.

Edit: RCA... I just reminded myself of an Izzard joke. Judaism, Islam, Christianity, RCA, Sony...

You scored as Reformed Evangelical. You most likely hold to TULIP and are sceptical about the possibilities of universal atonement or resistible grace. The most important thing the Church can do is make sure people hear how they can go to heaven when they die.

The last sentence in that does not seem to match some of my answers. Not that I don't think sharing the Gospel is important. I do. But sharing the Gospel goes hand in hand with loving people. And that means social action.

But as you can see, I had three that were really close. I'm baptised Presbyterian, grew up African Methodist Episcopalian, and am somewhat dissatisfied with my church experience as of late and think that things could use some changing.

Actually, a major branch of the Catholic church is called the "Lutheran" branch. I used to attend a Lutheran Catholic church, actually. I'm not sure what exactly that entails, but it's interesting trivia. (I'm pretty sure the Catholic church has since acknowledged most of Luther's complaints and responded accordingly too, but that's a different thing entirely.)

I'm not up for taking the test again, but I remember landing (quite predictably) in the Emergent/PoMo category.

Indeed, afro, that last sentence doesn't line up with the Reformed faith whatsoever. The Reformed Faith teaches that worship, not evangelism, is the most important facet of the Christian life.

for the quiz "what theologian are you" i got this answer:

You scored as John Calvin. Much of what is now called Calvinism had more to do with his followers than Calvin himself, and so you may or may not be committed to TULIP, though God's sovereignty is all important.

i'm beginning to wonder about the validity of those quizzes. how could i be strongly Wesleyan in theological worldview and yet be John Calvin if i were a theologian? kind of funny.

but Calvin seems to be a reasonable conclusion for me. i do heavily identify with him. interestingly enough i grew up ADAMANTLY anti-Calvinist.
