The New Yorker has posted a terrific, in-depth look at the writings of Roal Dahl... as well as the author's many enemies.

I really do believe he was one of the best children's writers of all time. He had such a great imagination. Anywho, cool article. I very much enjoyed it.

Boy was pure genius... one of my alltime favorite children's books.

it's like God himself is coming home to say:
"I, I can do anything, if you want me here.
and I can fix anything, if you'll let me near.
where are those secrets now (that you're just scared to tell)?
I'll whisper them all aloud so you can hear yourself."

I don't think I ever heard of him, and I can't remember if I read any of his books when I was a kid in the 1960s.
What are his five most famous books?

I'll give you the top two:

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
James and the Giant Peach

We could probably argue quite a bit beyond there about who really belongs in the top 5. Make sure to get the book of JatGP, the movie doesn't do it justice.

Well, of course I have heard of those, but only from the movies.
I don't remember ever reading them as a child.

If you don’t have freedom as a principle, you can never see a reason not to make an exception. There are constantly going to be times when for one reason or another there’s some practical convenience in making an exception.

Indeed, Vlad!; that's one of the things that always troubled me a bit about Matilda.

I love Roald Dahl; I think I read all his books when I was a kid/early teenager.

Yes! I especially love the part where he puts the bird droppings in his brother in-law's pipe. Laughs galore...

Did he have to get permission from Edgar Rice Burrough's estate to use Boy in a novel? huh

I read Matilda when I was eight. I've not read a book of his since then. As I recall, I didn't particularly enjoy or dislike Matilda. It was one of those rare books that I was pretty much "meh" on.
