I really love "Yoshimi...", but I don't think one should release the a better version of the same music so soon after first release.  It smacks so much of "cheap cash-in"...kind of reminds me of the LotR, then LotR extended thing.  If anything, they should be released at the same time.

Anyway, you can read the story over at www.pitchforkmedia.com.  It'll be complete with a DVD, all of the main album will be in 5.1 surround (which I've never checked out before...my copy of "Dark Side of the Moon" is the older remastered CD).

On a side note, many of Bob Dylan's albums will be re-engineered to take advantage of 5.1 surround sound.  Now that's cool.

NewLine announced the 4-disc set long before the movie was even out of theaters. People knew good and well that there would be a better set coming along, so I have absolutely zero sympathy for anyone who bought the bare-bones, 2-disc set and then felt compelled to shell out more money for the 4-discs.

But that's off-topic...

This is very cool. Also, REM's Reveal and Automatic will be getting a similar remastered treatment.

If there's one album that's in need of an updated sound quality, it's ACHTUNG BABY!!!!!

I have some sympathy for them.  I knew to wait, but not everyone pays attention to Hollywood announcements, and not all salesperson's are helpful in clueing people in.  I still think it would be better released together, on the same day...give people the ability to choose without waiting.

Another problem I have with it is that, if any album needs remixing for 5.1 surround by the Lips, it is Zaireeka.  That one is a pain to play in any sense, but I guess you'd lose some of that album's concept by doing that.

I'd love to see some of the big 90s album remixed for surround, and "Achtung" is definitely one of them.  You're making me a very poor man by telling me about these REM re-releases.  In the end, I might not buy all these re-releases...they sound great in stereo anyhow.  I think I'd be more likely to buy new albums that want to take advantage of the technology right out of the starting gate.

Yeah, the sound quality of Reveal is excellent (it just came out 2 years ago, for crying out loud), and Automatic has aged very well. I dunno, I'd like to hear the new Automatic, and I might buy it if the difference it just enormous, but at this point I'm thinking...no.

I must say, I'm eternally thankful for the process of remastering albums. Old jazz recordings, expecially, have benefited, as have... um... well... pretty much ALL of Peter Gabriel's pre-Us recordings. (And, actually, there might be a remastered Us, but I haven't heard it).

It's my understanding that some of the much older music was saved from degrading totally beyond repair by digital technology.  I'm glad it's here...Thom Yorke can call CDs a "s*it format" if he wants to, I think he's wrong on that one, although a good vinyl on a good player can sound as good as a stereo CD.

I knew there was a reason I was waiting to buy this album! Achtung Baby too. Still holding out for that one.

but murlough, not all of us can see 10 years into the future.  I can kind of understand this for Achtung Baby! because I don't think they had the option of releasing it this way in 1991 (I'm not sure, but I don't believe anyone thought of doing that).  When "Yoshimi" was released, they could have given the people choice on its first release date if that's what they wanted to do.
