Ok, my theory on the Entwives, because someone asked.

I was reading the appendices one day when I noticed some information of the Olog-Hai. Apparently these were trolls that were unusually strong and could withstand sunlight. They were seen north of the place that the Entwives were last seen and were thought to be a breeding of trolls and some other creature. My theory is that Sauron captured the Entwives, destroyed their lands, and forced them to breed with trolls to create the Olog-Hai.

That's not too farfetched, but it's still in the realm of conjecture. It doesn't explain why all the Entwives seem to have vanished, for one, though I suppose they were never exactly numerous.

And somehow the thought of hot troll-on-entwife action is so bizarre that it doesn't affect me  rolleyes

If you don’t have freedom as a principle, you can never see a reason not to make an exception. There are constantly going to be times when for one reason or another there’s some practical convenience in making an exception.
