This thought occured to me today while I was working. Last year the film that I saw that I thought was the "best" was Closer (Last year I saw about ten movies total). Even though I thought it was the best, its not my favorite. Its not the kind of movie that I could watch again, despite the great performances. My favorite movies last year were Saved! and Collateral. My thought was that, hey... that seems a bit strange to me, and I wondered if anyone else had conflicting "Best" and "Favorite" films.

Sometimes I'll see an acclaimed art movie and find nothing wrong with it, but, for whatever reason, the characters don't appeal to me, I don't resonate with the story, or the film just doesn't move me the way others do.

Other times, I'll have a blast at a frivolous popcorn movie, or I'll latch on to a less-than-excellent film for sentimental reasons.

So yeah, there's definitely a difference.

I suppose I could fit the same thign into music, too. Though that's harder. Generally if I like an album more I'll listen to it more. One notable exception is The Beautiful Letdown. I think its Switchfoot's most consistent top to bottom effort and I really like a good deal of the songs on it, but I find myself listening to New Way to be Human more because of Company Car, Something More, and Under the Floor.

There's definitely a difference, and recognizing that difference is a very, very good thing that many people seem to lack.

PS: NWTBH is a better album than TBL because it is more creative and less derivative. And it's still pretty consistent.
