Well I am no music critic but the best way to describe him (or comparisions) are to thom yorke  jeff buckley and joseph arthur, his voice and music in my opinion are equal to or even better than those artists.  Allmusic.com has a nice review on him if you run a search and paste magazine (my fave) gave him four stars, which is where I first heard of him....I just picked up the album today so I need more time with it.....but all I can say is wow!

I really like "Volcano." (Oddly enough upon first seeing the video, I thought it was Nickel Creek.)

update: i bought the album a couple days ago in wisconsin, and i love it, it's beautiful.  not sure that it stands with joseph arthur (has anyone gotten the other cds yet?) or thom yorke, but it really is great music.

is it just me, or does the second song sound like the soundtrack to crouching tiger, hidden dragon?  really cool tho', i love it

I agree with a review I just read about joseph arthur. " By giving prominent positions to lines like I wish I could follow you to the shore of freedom from honey and the moon he tends to build in the verses toward slightly disapponting resolutions in the choruses" plus as this review says "a lot of the gauzy eloctronics shimmer across the surface rather than glisten within the fabric of the tune" (wow!...deep..haha.  He seems to me like he would work better as a producer than an artist in the future....at least from what I have heard on redemptions son....I thought come to where Im from was a much superior album though the song favorite girl is amazing.  And Thom Yorke....I agree with Jeffery Overstreet that much more of  all this gloom and this listener is leaving....Smile Thom!!! People worship your creativity! Your a critic fave! You make millions! Is your life this big of a drag?  Thats bound to get me in trouble on this board but to be honest I dont really listen to radiohead outside of the bends and ok computer anymore.

I think it would be really funny if Radiohead, in an effort to be unpredictable and answer critics who call them "too negative", were to record an extremely poppy, annoyingly cheerful album.  That would be hilarious! laugh

yah, 'come to where i'm from' is probably my favorite out of the three as well.  fav. songs: 'history', exhausted', 'eyes on my back', 'tattoo'....  the album is genius.

'favorite girl 'on redemptions son is probably my fav. song on it too... whooee, small world.

did you like 'big city secrets'?  i really liked the songs birthday card and porcupine the best.

Haven't heard the first one.  Is it similar to come to where I'm from.?I know T-Bone Burnett produced his first two albums.  His work has been exceptional in the past, definitely one of the great producers

Hmmm... not sure that I agree. None of the choruses strike me as over-simplified, and the production is blurry enough that the electronics blend in just fine.

This is the one area on which I disagree with Overstreet the mose. (Well, outside of Switchfoot, maybe). Thom Yorke's lyrics are all about fighting back against all forces anti-human. What's so negative about that?

Back to the matter at hand (although I think a thom yorke/radiohead post would be a good idea sometime discussing that.....steve stockman did a good review of kid a by the way folks) Anyway I am really liking what I am hearing from damien rice and to think that this is his first big or maybe even first release in the states... man this guy is on a great path.  His style stands on it's own in my opinion even through the comparisons.  I do like Joseph Arthur....I believe he is a poet and leaves a lot of great lyrics/songs behind.....especially from come to where im from and the songs redemptions son and favorite girl from his latest realese although maybe it's just me but I think his voice sounds a lot like billy corgan.....might have to check into that.....but I love damiens voice....I'd say that Over the rhine's new disc will be my favorite of the year but damien rice's O is not going to be too far behind.  But in my humble opinion the songwriting of Joseph Arthur and Damien Rice is good but over the rhine.....wow!...that's great stuff!  Sorry kinda trailed in different areas on this post but I will say this check out damien rice's O joseph arthurs come to where im from and whatever you do if you only buy 1 cd for the rest of the year get ohio by over the rhine.
