OK, now that the wedding, honeymoon, and general financial chaos are over with, and I have a little more free time, it's about time to start talking about bringing this game back. First, let's discuss the first iteration of the game. What worked. What didn't work? Was the scoring system reasonable? Were the rules on acceptable albums fair? Was a week enough time, or was it too much? Any other general comments on things you'd like to see in Mach II? Any theme rounds we should do?

And also, who wants to be critics the second time around? This is flexible from round to round, but at least having an idea of the core participants would be good.

I'm thinking of starting this up not long after we get the Pub back online, or around the beginning of October, whichever happens first.

I'd be acritic this time, that was the fun for me.

I didn't have any real problems with it, sometimes I'd be unusually busy and it would be hard for me to get a good feel for an album in a week, but a week seemed reasonable.

Maybe we could do an EP week.

I'm in.

I thought the rules were fine.  How about new artist week, or weeks where everyone is doing a particular genre or year.  Really, whatever new creative ideas others may want are fine with me.

We did have a debate last time about whether the game was easier for the critics or the non-critics. I'd like to have that be as level a playing field as possible, but I'm not sure if I could improve the scoring system to do that. Having 7 guesses to make instead of 6 seems to present more of a margin for error, but less panalty per individual error. It seemed to me to balance out - but what do others think of this?

Well, it really didn't bother me, and I didn't end up scoring very highly in the game, relatively-speaking.  What are the possible solutions here?  Guess the non-participating AMG/amazon/metacritic on a particular album for critics?

Nah, wouldn't want to do that because we can't interrogate them about their reasoning afterwards. More fun when it's people we know doing the rating.

I'm definitely in as a critic.

More thoughts to come as far as what needs to be changed, etc.

I'm actually going to guess on all the rounds this time.  haha.

If I had access to new material each round, I would be in as a critic . . . as it is now, I don't have that option.  So I'll just be a layperson and guess at y'alls thought processes.

I'm going to make the rule that all theme weeks must be approved by all critics by the beginning of the previous round. That way we all have a week to find something that fits the theme.

Dude, this isn't Survivor.  If you want to be a critic, you're a critic.

The only criteria for being a critic is wanting to be one, and having access to something new to rate each week. If you can't come up with something for a given round, no worries; you just aren't a critic for that round and the rest of us have less guessing to do. You don't get penalized for that in any way.

This might be workable for me, actually.  Oh!  I could borrow some of my dad's albums and rate them . . . ah ha, this way I can listen to spiffy music and not spend any more money.  Duh, I should have thought of that before.

and I love the idea of theme weeks.  This should be fun.

I'll jump in as a critic for this round.  I'm actually in the same boat as a few other people in that I can't always guarantee I'll have something new every week.  However, if that should happen, I could either search the internet for full album samples (I've seen some on purevolume.com), review something older that I haven't talked about much on here, or just pass for that week.

Sort of.  I think the bitrate is too low for me to give an assessment of the music based on that, but it's still the coolest thing I saw on the internet last week.

So murlough, do you think we can set a date for when this game is gonna start?

I ask just because I've got a number of things I'm digesting right now that I may want to use for this game, but, if it's still a long way off, I may just go ahead and rate 'em.

The game starts when Vlad! gets the Pub working. If that doesn't look like it's gonna happen any time soon, then we'll go with Oct. 1 for the start date. I'm waiting to see how thigns go, because there's some stuff I'd love to be able to upload for y'all.

I guess just PM me your album picks by October 1. I'll start the game that day, or soon after (depending on how busy I am). I wanted to have access to the Pub in order to share songs from our albums, but oh well, we can make do without it.

Perhaps I should have asked earlier--we're not limiting the music to just-released material, right?  cause that would shorten the list of good stuff to hear.  haha.

No, not at all. People chose stuff from many years ago in the first version of the game, and are free to do so this time around. That's just harder for me to do, because a lot of stuff from years past that I've really listened to, I've already ranked and/or reviewed in a publicly accessible place.

Awesome.  I figured that was probably the case, just thought I should perhaps ask.

OK, I've decided to start the first round early.

http://www.thephorum.net/index.php?act=ST&f=7&t=2519

You'll still have until midnight next Friday to guess, and new rounds will usually be started on Saturday. (That way I'm not doing the scoring and stuff while at work.) Also, the deadline for critics to choose albums hasn't passed yet, so any critics who forgot to PM me with their picks can still get them in before midnight tonight. I just wanted to get the ball rolling on this game.
