Gosh, there's a lot of "i have no idea" picks this week. Oh well, here we go.
BDG: 3 stars (the safest pick there is) Bloop: 4 stars Brenden: 4 stars Danny: 4 stars Josh: 3 stars Murlough: 5 stars Ninja: 4 stars Plvarona: 4 stars WorldofCM: 5 stars
I uploaded a tune from Back in Black, but because my CD burner has been acting funny lately, had to burn it in Windows Media. Therefore, it's a .wma file. Hopefully that's not a huge pain in the butt for y'all, since I have no idea how to convert from .wma to .mp3. I also hope Windows didn't totally mangle the song like MusicMatch has been doing lately.

I tried that. It wouldn't work. That's odd...it works for me. That's what I use to make my songs MP3s, since I usually use iTunes.

OK, it's time to post our ratings. Sorry I'm getting to this so late. I'll go first and say that, in a shocking move, I'm giving my perennial favorite Andrew Peterson 3 stars. Why? Well, quite honestly I think his gimmicks are getting a bit old. I'm all for relaxing to some mellow folk music, and I don't mind when Andrew experiments with the mold a little bit - the title track and "Mystery of Mercy" are great examples of how changing up the sound a little really works wonders for him. But aside from those songs, "Lay Me Down", and "The Havens Grey", this record kind of bores me. I'm especially appalled that he ended the record on the tired, overused "there must be more" theme. Still a positive rating, but definitely Peterson's least interesting record thus far. With the exception of his Christmas album, he's been on a steady decline ever since his excellent debut.

I'm giving Flood 3 stars.
Yes, there are some really clever songs, and a few laugh-out-loud one-liners or musical gags. But the album is overlong, and many of the songs are just dumb. What's more, the keyboard-heavy production makes the album sound very dated-- it actually sounds like an artifact from the early 1980s, though it was really made in 1990.
Jeffrey Overstreet loves this album, so maybe I'm just missing something. But for now I'm going to give it a solid C rating-- not awful, just kinda meh.

I'm giving Franz Ferdinand's Self-Titled 4 Stars. It's a fun album, to say the least, and a good one to pop in at a party. The lack of any real ballads or slower songs kind of brings it down a little, along with the fact that the songs get kind of repetitive around the end. Those are minor complaints, though.
Edit: Put me down for Joy Electric's "The White Songbook" next week.

Well, I'll say flat out that most of you guys had me figured correctly this week. However, I'm sure you want to know why I rated the way I did.
Album Reviewed: Ten Thousand Days - Bebo Norman
Pros: Fairly solid songwriting all-around with the highlights including "The Hammer Holds" as well as the more obscure "Where The Angels Sleep" and "A Page is Turned." The first six songs are about as strong as Bebo has written. Even though the songs have the same basic sound, there are a few subtle changes in the instrumentation on a few songs that help to keep things interesting.
Cons: Some of the songs tend to bleed together. While I can understand the instrumentation in "Selwood Farm", the song still came off as cheesy to me.
The Bottom Line: This is a very solid album, and as long as you know coming in that this is going to be a quiet folk-based album, it's an enjoyable listen. I honestly think this is Bebo's strongest album. However, the album just doesn't stand out enough to be considered a great album. It's still very good, though.
Rating: B+, which for the purpose of this game is 4 stars.
EDITED TO ADD: Murlough, I'd like to change my pick for this next round. So could you scratch what I PM'd you earlier, and replace it with Kevin Max's The Imposter? I'll just do the other album later (maybe even the following round.)

I had a hard time picking a score for this - the music is played well and very diverse, yet very cohesive. The style gives it a bit of an ear-candy effect. I can't make out any of the lyrics though, and the songs really don't stick out melodically even though they do all sound different. Remembering the chart I made a while back to help people out with this game (with the sample albums in each rating), I have to call this a 3 star album, because it's not as strong as some of the others I've called 3 star albums (even though I'm tempted to call this a 4 star album because it's extremely pleasant to listen to).
Put me down for Norah Jones' Come Away With Me for next week.

Hey, Velour was reviewed. That happens to be one of my favorite recordings. I'm really surprised you only gave it 3 stars, but I do understand your reasons. It's primarily noise-rock, so the melodies aren't particularly memorable, and the lyrics are kind of lost in all the echoing and fuzz in some songs. Lyrics in the cd booklet would have helped, definetely.

Apparently you guys have me figured out. Anyway, other than the weak and boring "Shake a Leg" and "Have a Drink On Me," Back in Black is darned solid. Yes, just about every song is about girls or booze--what other band could get away with singing about drinking just after their last lead singer died of alcohol poisoning?--and the songs not about that are about taking you to hell. Yes, it's juvenile. Yes, it's meat and potatoes--but they never tasted so yummy. "What You Do For Money Honey" is often overlooked, but it RULES; "Let Me Put My Love Into You" is pretty awesome as well. And then the classics: "Shook Me All Night Long," "Back in Black," "Hell's Bells," etc. Sweet. 4 stars.
Put me down for The Police's Synchronicity next week.

Ok, now I have more time.
I'm new to DCFC, but I've been loving the album. Here and there are some scattered weak points, but there's no one song that makes me want to skop it. And the music is consistantly good, the melodies memorable, and it holds my interest the whole time. Since I only have monir issues with the album, such as it sounding samey in spots, and the lead singer doesn't show much range of vocals, I'd go with an A- rating, which translate here to 5 stars.
*edit* I just remembered, I wanted to do Kevin Max's new album.

I'm actually going to go with a 2 stars on 3 the God Way... the production and beats are good at times, but the lyrics are really stupid for the most part and the trio really doesn't pull off a cohesive performance. The album really annoys the crap out of me whenever i listen to it and i hope they never combine their efforts again... next week, i'll dabble with some Southern Rock meets Metal and work on Maylene and the Sons of Disaster... ( PureVolume) <-- that will be the full album between the 24th and the 30th. peace... love... bdg...

I'll just tell you all what I wrote murlough as I thought I'd be out of town when the game ended.
A Bigger Bang gets 3 stars (C+) by me. It's great to hear the band sounding so young and vibrant, the guitar work is great in that vintage sort of way, but at the same time, the album is very long and heavy on filler. I know 60s bands in general are song- rather than album-oriented, but if that's what one is going for, each song should be at least very good. Cut out about half, and you would easily have a 4 star effort here, and it is close to that, but it's not quite strong enough.
I also had to nick it just for creating such a controversial fuss over a song that just isn't very strong in the first place, musically or lyrically.
For my next album, I'll do Fijacion Oral Vol. 1 by Shakira.
