I rarely make literarey recommendations around here, but this time I gotta say... Vlad!, you MUST read this book immediately.

The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume 1, is an essential collection of sci-fi short stories; indeed, if someone asked me what the one indespensible science fiction book was, I might have to say this one. It's a wonderful collection that includes works by Asimov, Bradbury, Clarke, Heinlein, and a number of other famous and lesser-known authors. And they were all voted on by sci-fi authors and fans, so the quality level is uniformly high.

Unfortunately, the book is no out of print, but Amazon has several used copies for sale, and the Knox County library has 3 or 4 copies available. So you sci-fi fans are without excuse; you should get your hands on this book immediately.

As for me, I'm eager to track down a copy of Volume 2.

Thanks for the recommendation, Josh. As it happens, I already own this book and have read it a number of times. It is indeed incredibly good, and can truly be regarded as the highlights of the genre.

So Vlad!, any stories from this collection that you particularly like?

I haven't read all of them yet-- so far just 7, all of which were for my sci-fi literature class-- but my favorite thus far is "The Cold Equations." I am also impressed with "Nightfall," which is pretty much the perfect model for the typical science fiction short story.

None of them are particularly bad, or even mediocre--this is, after all, a hall of fame--but "The Quest for Saint Aquin", "The Little Black Bag", "Microcosmic God", "A Rose for Ecclesiastes", and "Arena" are among my favorites. In fact, my only real complaint about the collection is that both Arthur C. Clarke and Robert A. Heinlen have stories that, while definitely solid, are not the pinnacle of their respective impressive bodies of work.

Others are free to voice their opinions on this collection as well, but Josh knows that I'm the only other person here who is likely to be as excitied about this volume as he is ^^
